Using small quantities of additives, such as cerium oxide, incorporated in the fuel or injected into the exhaust ahead of the particulate trap. The additive, when collected on the filter with the particulate, allows the particulate to bum at normal exhaust temperatures to form carbon dioxide and water. This system is insensitive to sulphur and can be used with current European diesel fuel containing 500 PPM of sulphur. [Pg.30]

Valve/loop injectors are the most common method of introducing the sample, and several models are available. The only special requirement for SEC applications is to ensure that the injection loop is sufficiently large (up to 200 jul). Autoinjectors are available, and are particularly useful for routine or QC-type applications. They enable the chromatograph to run unattended (if coupled to a suitable automatic data acquisition system), but of course still require an operator to make up and filter solutions, load the carousel and process the data. The heart of a furnace black production plant is the furnace in which the carbon black is formed. The feedstock is injected, usually as an atomized spray, into a high-temperature and high-energy density zone, which is achieved by burning a fuel (natural gas or oil) with air. The oxygen, which is in excess with respect to the fuel, is not sufficient for the complete combustion of the feedstock, which therefore is, for the most part, pyrolyzed to form carbon black at temperatures of 1200-1900 °C. HPLC was performed using Waters 600S solvent delivery system (Waters, Milford, MA, U.S.A.). 2487 UV dual channel detector of Waters was used and injector (20 fit sample loop) from Rheodyne. The ocean power stations operate on the basis of the temperature difference between the upper and lower water layers. Taking advantage of the one-step solution of ozone in depth, the COD is decreased which prevents the befouling in the piping systems found in the upper layers.
