Bayer marketed PPS compounds in the United States under the trade name Tedur, but the company has exited the PPS business. PPS is also marketed in the United States by GE Plastics, whose source of neat resin is Tosoh Corporation of Japan. GE Plastics markets PPS under the trade name Supec PPS. Patent activity by Tennessee Eastman describes an alternative process for the production of poly(phenylene sulfide/disulfide), although samples of such product have not appeared as of early 1996. Both Phillips and Hoechst Celanese have aimounced plans to debotdeneck their existing U.S. faciUties in order to meet anticipated market growth.

Commercial grades of PVP, K-15, K-30, K-90, and K-120 and the quaternized copolymer of vinylpyrrolidone and dimthylaminoethylmethacrylate (poly-VP/ DMAEMA) made by International Specialty Products (ISP) were used in this study. PEO standard calibration kits were purchased from Polymer Laboratories Ltd. (PL), American Polymer Standards Corporation (APSC), Polymer Standards Service (PSS), and Tosoh Corporation (TSK). In addition, two narrow NIST standards, 1923 and 1924, were used to evaluate commercial PEO standards. Deionized, filtered water, and high-performance liquid chromatography grade methanol purchased from Aldrich or Fischer Scientific were used in this study. Lithium nitrate (LiN03) from Aldrich was the salt added to the mobile phases to control for polyelectrolyte effects.

Other Hgands are useful in the C-N bond coupling of aryl bromides and cyclic amines. In 1998, Nishiyama and co-workers at Tosoh corporation reported that tri-ferf-butylphosphine is an effective supporting hgand for the palladium-catalyzed arylation of piperazine [36]. The (f-Bu)3P/Pd-catalyst provided the product with 1 mol% Pd in high selectivity, Eq. (11). 

Watanabe s group at Tosoh Corporation reported the coupling of a chlorine-substituted indole and piperazine using a 24/Pd-based catalyst, Eq. (167) [134]. The indole substrate, which was prepare via a novel palladium-catalyzed cycliza-tion, was aminated in 94% yield. 

Various kinds of sorbents were investigated in this work. Four as-received sorbents Na-type Y-zeolite (Si/Al=2.43, Strem Chemical), H-type ultra-stable Y-zeolite (Si/Al=195, TOSOH Corporation), activated carbon (Type PCB, Calgon Carbon Corporation) and modified activated alumina (Selexsorb CDX, Alcoa Industrial Chemical), were used in this study. According to the product datasheets, Selexsorb CDX is formulated for adsorption of sulfur-based molecules, nitrogen-based molecules, and oxygenated hydrocarbon molecules. Na-Y and H-USY were in powder form (binderless). Since activated carbon was in granular form and activated alumina was in pellet form, they were crushed into powder form for evaluation.

In Japan, Tosoh Corporation commenced construction in 2003 of a 160,000 metric tons per year plant at Nanyo, to supply Nippon Polyurethane Industry Co. Ltd, manufacturer of 170,000 metric tons per year of MDI (9d)23. Nippon also manufactures 25,000 metric tons per year of a blend of 2,4- and 2,6-toluene diisocyanates, TDI (10a and 10b), by a process that involves toluidines as intermediates24. Tosoh has since embarked on construction of a new 159 million aniline plant. Japan produced 196,000 metric tons of aniline in 2005, based on 1.1% annual growth.
