Element-selective detectors. Many samples, e.g. those originating from environmental studies, contain so many constituent compounds that the gas chromatogram obtained is a complex array of peaks. The electrical conductivity detector is probably the second most commonly used in LC. By its nature, it can only detect those substances that ionize and, consequently, is used frequently in the analysis of inorganic acids, bases and salts. A system is a convenient concept that is used to describe how the individual parts of anything (a system) are perceived to interact. System concepts are used by many disciplines and may form a common framework to support global environmental studies. A system definition must start with the identification of the boundaries of the system of interest. Next, the inputs and outputs to that system must be identified.
