Engineers technically competent

While successbil and economical system designs can be devised by experienced process engineers, the competent technical aid available from equipment supphers has led to a growing trend toward the purchase of complete systems, even on small jobs, rather than iu-plaut assembly from components on the basis of in-house designs. An idea of the change in capital investment for typical pneumatic-conveyor systems as a function of increasing transfer rates is given in Table 21-12. [Pg.1928]

This concept book is intended for nse by chemical engineers and other technical personnel involved in the design, operation, and maintenance of facilities and eqnipment where deflagration and detonation arresters (DBAs) may be reqnired. These people are nsnally technically competent individnals who are aware of, bnt not experts in, combnstion phenomena. The facilities where snch devices may be needed inclnde chemical plants, petrochemical plants, petrolenm refineries, pharmacentical plants, specialty chemical plants, storage tank farms, loading and nnloading facilities, and pipelines. [Pg.1]

Often looked upon as soft engineering not requiring the same level of technical competence as other engineering disciplines, human factors engineering may be just the opposite. It may be more conceptual than mathematical, bnt that doesn t detract from its importance nor from the elements of design and application that it embraces (Corlett and Clark, 1995 ... [Pg.462]

Systems Engineering Technical Specialties specific technical competencies and - even more important - the vision and ability necessary to leverage technical specialties as part of a project team. The specialty areas include information engineering for the enterprise. [Pg.215]

Our Leadership and Management Competency Model, derived from our successful leadership experiences, highlights additional non-technical competencies, including team-oriented skills. These skills, and those of the Systems Engineering Competency Model, must be applied in the appropriate mix for a given context and set of circumstances. [Pg.215]

Finally, there is a general lack of expertise in the area of software system safety. Not only are there grossly insufficient numbers of qualified system safety engineers with software safety credentials but also very few recognized textbooks, seminars, university programs, or competent consultants are available. The lack of technical competence in this area seems to span the entire system safety community. [Pg.44]

Safety professional staff Did the safety staff have adequate professional qualifications Did safety professionals have professional registration (certified safety professionals or professional engineers) Did safety professionals have the educational backgrounds and credentials necessary for technical competence and credibility in the organization Did they have an appropriate mix of safety, engineering, human factors, and management skills and knowledge Did the safety staff... [Pg.247]

Several areas of this manufacturing company jointly considered the feasibility of offshoring certain engineering tasks. When the project started, it negatively affected employees morale and some key contributors feared losing their jobs. However, the leadership implemented an inclusive process to obtain input from key employees. The goal was to identify and protect the company s strategic technical competencies and the employees who ... [Pg.193]

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) a nonprofit educational and technical organization created to promote and enhance the technical competency and activities in mechanical engineering. [Pg.161]

Technical competence (MODISA 2004) needs to be understood and measurable. The type of technical competence needs to be determined is it technical competence in Safety Engineering practices perhaps with fomnal qualirications Or technical competence in the domain (or with similar technology) developed through experience How can technical competence be determined and how much is enough ... [Pg.282]

Engineering companies trade on their reputation, which can serve as a measure of their technical competence. However, past performance needs to be balanced against turnover of staff (either permanent or contract) as key knowledge that may have been underpinning past success will leave with the staff that move on. [Pg.282]

The installer must have trained specialists with expert knowledge and experience in plastics and civil engineering, in plastics quality control and in the installation methods of large-area geosynthetic liner systems. The installer s personnel must be able to compile a technically sound proposal on the basis of tender documents and provide a full service in accordance with the conditions. They must be able to assess the effect of deficiencies detected on the liner system s performance in order to be able to perform a practical and technically competent repair . [Pg.369]

In tomorrow s engineering workplace, competent technical skills are a necessary but not sufficient eondition. However, in addition to the above-stated skills, it is necessary that an engineer possess the ability to work in the dynamic, multicultural teams that... [Pg.59]

Risk is the potential for realization of unwanted, negative consequences from an event. Provided sufficient information is available it is possible to quantify the risk. Technically competent people such as chemists, doctors and engineers are trained to measure risks objectively. However, no accurate prediction can be made for the future. More relevant is the principle that the techiucally competent, while having the knowledge to... [Pg.5]
