Dianna S. Kocurek, P.E., CSP is a partner in the environmental consulting firm of Tischler/Kocurek, specializing in solid and hazardous waste management and wastewater treatment. Ms. Kocurek has a masters in environmental engineering from the University of Wisconsin and has over fourteen years experience in the environmental field. She is a registered professional engineer and a certified safety professional. 

Gayle Woodside, P.E., CSP is the Environmental Engineering manager at the IBM facility in Austin, Texas. A registered professional engineer and a certified safety professional, she earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas. Ms. Woodside has over 15 years experience in hazardous waste and hazardous materials management. 

Obtain professional credentials—particularly the Certified Safety Professional designation, which has grown in significance as employment criteria. 

Those who obtain certification as safety professionals through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals represent a broad range of safety practice. Similarly, the members of its Board of Directors come from several organizations and hold a variety of technical and management positions. Nevertheless, they have agreed on and published their response to the question. What is a safety professional You can find it at www.bcsp.org. It s downloadable, and it follows. Note that throughout the document, safety professionals identify and evaluate hazards as a prelude to all other aspects of their work. 

At a meeting of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, a definition of safety practice was written during discussions of a project to validate that examinations given properly measure what safety professionals actually do. It is as follows.

Fortunately, the work of many others with regard to the knowledge and skill required for the practice of safety, done under the auspices of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), serves as valuable resources for the purposes of this chapter. A review of the history of that highly significant work is given here. 

BCSP is an examination and certifying body. Candidates who pass a Safety Fundamentals Examination receive the Associate Safety Professional (ASP) title those who pass the Comprehensive Practice Examination receive the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) title. Also, BCSP gives specialty examinations in subjects such as system safety and ergonomics.

Note the term a common body of knowledge. In the process of researching and writing Chapter 5, Academic and skill Requirements for the Practice of Safety, I concluded that the Curriculum Standards for Baccalaureate Degrees in Safety, jointly pubMshed by the Academic Accreditation Council of the American Society of Safety Engineers and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, estabhsh a rigor of education that adequately prepares one to enter the safety profession. 

Furthermore, I observed that the domains and responsibihties and the knowledge and skill categories for the Comprehensive Practice Examination given by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals defines the breadth of knowledge and skill required in appMed safety practice. 

Much thanks should be given to those visionaries on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Safety Engineers in the 1960s who conceived of and established the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). As a result of their work, a sound and proven certification program exists for safety professionals, for which recogifition continues to grow. The CSP—the Certified Safety Professional designation—has become the mark of the professional within the safety field. 

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals and the American Society of Safety Engineers have issued Codes of Professional Conduct that deserve publicity and promotion. Currently applicable codes of ethics and professional conduct issued by BCSP and ASSE are Addenda A and B in this chapter. 

At least in employment, the value of professional certification—the CSP designation—has achieved greater recognition. That is a form of societal sanction. There has been a continual increase in the percentage of job advertisements for safety positions that mention the desirability of being a Certified Safety Professional. 

Board of Certified Safety Professionals Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct... 

This code sets forth the code of ethics and professional standards to be observed by holders of documents of certification conferred by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. Certificants shall, in their professional safety activities, sustain and advance the integrity, honor, and prestige of the safety profession by adherence to these standards. 

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) is recognized as the leader in high-quality credentialing for safety, health and environmental practitioners. BCSP establishes standards for and verifies competency in professional safety practice and evaluates certificants for compliance with recertification requirements. BCSP also operates technician, technologist and supervisoty SH E certifications that provide additional career paths for safety pracffoneis. Figure 15-10 Cut Set Example No. 2. In this example, base events 1 and 2 both appear more than once, therefore it is possible to reduce the total cut sets by first eliminating redundant numbers in each row (matrix 5) and then eliminating rows which contain all of the events found in a shorter row (matrix 6) to produce the minimum cut set of events 1 and 2. This example uses the same fault tree configuration as one used by the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) examination in the Examination Information booklet, fifth edition, 1989 by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (pp. 27-29).

Based on information from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, Table 25-5 shows the timeline experience with all candidates from the time of application until award of the CSP. Also, it is interesting to note that the average new CSP was approximately 39 years of age. The youngest to achieve certification was 24 and the oldest was 74 years old.
