Fewer safety professionals are employed now in most of the major companies with which 1 have had association in the past few years. Nevertheless, the superior performers still maintain a top-quaUty staff, which is a requisite for the accomplishment level defined by the culture. The safety staff is expected to earn recognition and respect and establish their capabilities, thereby being sought by decision makers for their views. They are a part of management and have ready access to senior executives. 

Expectations of supervisors, by their superiors and by society in general, have unfortunately become complex and difficult to attain—which means that supervisors must have a sound support stracture to be successful. That support stmcture begins with the location manager and the staff iirnnediately subordinate to the manager. It includes depth of training, a good communication system on hazards, up and down, and the resources of qualified safety professionals as consultants. 

Many companies have reviewed and updated their emeigency and disaster plans since the World Trade Towers event. In the superior performing companies, which have extensive security departments, the safety professionals were impacted and participated in the updating, but most of the work fell to the security staff. 

As part of their positions, safety professionals must plan for and manage resources and funds related to their functions. They may be responsible for supervising a diverse staff of professionals. 

In a major company with exceptionally good OSHA recordable and lost workday case rates, the chief executive officer declared that results were still not acceptable and that significant reductions in injuries and illnesses were to be made. The extensive and well-qualified staff of safety professionals convinced management to use incident investigation as one means of reinforcing its intent to achieve better results.

It s also important that safety professionals appreciate the culture of an organization and the perception of risk a management staff may have, its fears and logic concerning risk, and its tolerance for risk. Managers are risk takers so are safety professionals. 

Historic practices of calling safety professionals safety officers should be changed, as should their roles. They are safety advisors because of the role they play and should not be portrayed as punishers or enforcers. If safety staff believe that employees actions are the only cause of accidents and are intent on focusing on the fault of persons only, this mind-set should be changed as part of the safety culture change.

After the relationship had ended, the safety professional evaluated the safety staff member s work performance, which was previously identified as excellent, and graded him as poor. As a result of this evaluation, the safety staff member was demoted and transferred to another less desirable facility. The safety staff member files a claim of discrimination. If the system has not been designed to have guidelines and checks for such problems, they will go undetected and will lead to an accident or injury. The safety professional must be involved in system design at every level. He or she must be familiar with the challenges faced daily by the operations staff. And he or she must be knowledgeable about the skills necessary to drive or work safely. ...
