Registration, professional

There are now approximately 670,000 professional engineering registrations in the United States. Since it is possible to be registered in more than one state, this represents an estimated 402,000 registered individuals of the 1.76 million engineers now practicing. 

The boards of registration typically have five to seven members who are appointed by the governor, usually based on the recommendation of state professional engineering societies. In some of the states, one or more public members or consumers serve on the board. 

These boards are primarily responsible for evaluating the education and experience of applicants for registration, administering an examination to those applicants who meet the minimum requirements, and granting registration to those who successfully complete the examination. In most states, a four-year engineering education is required plus four years of experience as a prerequisite. A common pattern for registration is the requirement that the applicant  

Graduate in an engineering curriculum of not less than four years.
