L v ndin. Lavandin, Lavandula hjbrida as a plant species is of recent origin, unknown until the late 1920s. It is a hybrid of two common lavenders, l vandula officinalis and l vandula latifolia. Lavandin is cultivated mainly ia southern France and has become one of the most produced and used natural perfumery materials. The flowering tops of the shmb are used to produce a concrete, an absolute, and a steam-distilled oil the last is by far the most used. Low cost and refreshing odor quaUty allow lavandin to be employed ia a wide variety of perfume appHcations and at high concentrations. Chemically it is comprised of 30—32% linalool (3) and linalyl acetate (1), along with numerous other substances, mosdy terpenic. [Pg.79]

Steam Reforming Processes. In the steam reforming process, light hydrocarbon feedstocks (qv), such as natural gas, Hquefied petroleum gas, and naphtha, or in some cases heavier distillate oils are purified of sulfur compounds (see Sulfurremoval and recovery). These then react with steam in the presence of a nickel-containing catalyst to produce a mixture of hydrogen, methane, and carbon oxides. Essentially total decomposition of compounds containing more than one carbon atom per molecule is obtained (see Ammonia Hydrogen Petroleum). [Pg.368]

The simplest unit employing vacuum fractionation is that designed by Canadian Badger for Dominion Tar and Chemical Company (now Rttgers VFT Inc.) at Hamilton, Ontario (13). In this plant, the tar is dehydrated in the usual manner by heat exchange and injection into a dehydrator. The dry tar is then heated under pressure in an oil-fired hehcal-tube heater and injected directly into the vacuum fractionating column from which a benzole fraction, overhead fraction, various oil fractions as side streams, and a pitch base product are taken. Some alterations were made to the plant in 1991, which allows some pitch properties to be controlled because pitch is the only product the distillate oils are used as fuel. [Pg.336]

Physical Properties. The physical properties of cmde tars vary over a wide range. Investigation has been mainly concerned with estabHshing correlations between the more readily deterrnined chemical and physical properties of the distillate oils and residual pitch, and other properties. Based on the correlations, other properties can be predicted with an accuracy sufficient for such purposes as plant design (Table 4). [Pg.341]

Low temperature tars contain 30—35 wt % non aromatic hydrocarbons, ca 30% of caustic-extractable phenols in the distillate oils, and 40—50% of aromatic hydrocarbons. The latter usually contain one or more alkyl substituent groups. On atmospheric distillation, coke-oven tars yield 55—60% pitch, whereas CVR tars give 40—50% pitch. The pitch yield from low temperature tars is in the 26—30% range. [Pg.343]

Tar. Before the development of gas chromatography (gc) and high pressure Hquid chromatography (hplc), the quantitative analyses of tar distillate oils involved tedious high efficiency fractionation and refractionation, followed by identification or estimation of individual components by ir or uv spectroscopy. In the 1990s, the main components of the distillate fractions of coal tars are deterrnined by gc and hplc (54). The analytical procedures included in the specifications for tar bulk products are given in the relevant Standardi2ation of Tar Products Tests Committee (STPTC) (33), ISO (55), and ASTM (35) standards. [Pg.346]

Phenyl-2-propenal [104-55-2], also referred to as cinnamaldehyde, is a pale yeUowHquid with a warm, sweet, spicy odor and pungent taste reminiscent of cinnamon. It is found naturally in the essential oils of Chinese cinnamon Cinnamomum cassia, Blume) (75—90%) and Ceylon cinnamon Cinnamomum lanicum, Nees) (60—75%) as the primary component in the steam distilled oils (27). It also occurs in many other essential oils at lower levels. [Pg.174]

Crude coal-tar processing is traditionally accomplished by distillation into pitch and a series of distillate oils. Coal-tar pitch is the matenal remaining after all the available distillates are removed The fmal softening point of the coal-tar pitch can be controlled via the distillation conditions. [Pg.209]

Atmospheric particulate emissions can be reduced by choosing cleaner fuels. Natural gas used as fuel emits negligible amounts of particulate matter. Oil-based processes also emit significantly fewer particulates than coal-fired combustion processes. Low-ash fossil fuels contain less noncombustible, ash-forming mineral matter and thus generate lower levels of particulate emissions. Lighter distillate oil-based combustion results in lower levels of particulate emissions than heavier residual oils. However, the choice of fuel is usually influenced by economic as well as environmental considerations. [Pg.20]
