In a system containing a Dean-Stark trap arranged for azeotropic removal of water, 8 g (48.5 mmol) of (- )-(S)-x-(mcthoxymcthyl)bcnzeneethanamine and 8.4 g (97 mmol) of 3-pentanone arc dissolved in 100 mL of benzene and, after addition of three drops of trifluoroacetic acid, the mixture is heated to reflux (oil bath) for 2 d. After being shaken with solid potassium carbonate and filtered, the solution is evaporated to give a yellow oil which gives a colorless oil upon distillation yield 11.3 g (100%) bp 85-88r,C/ 0.02 Torr [a] ,3 —58.8 (c = 3-4, methanol). [Pg.976]

Adding surfactant ORS-41 in the alkaline/oil system reduced the IFT to an ultralow level. Figure 13.8 shows the ASP/oil IFT at different distillate fractions here, the IFT increased with the heavy fractions among XI, X2, and X3. Because the oil fraction had lighter components, the reaction with the hydro-phobic composition became stronger, and the IFT was lower. Turbine oil systems usually contain some free water as a result of steam leaking through glands and then condensing. Marine systems may also have salt water present because of leakage from coolers. Because of this, rust inhibitors are usually incorporated. The rust-preventing properties of turbine oils are measured by a method (ASTM D-665, IP 135) that uses synthetic seawater or distilled water in the presence of steel. In this system, surprisingly only (E)-2 hexenol was oxidized. Thus this observation was applied to developing natural green notes. The natural C6 alcohols mixture used was composed of (E)-2-hexenol, (Z)-3-hexenol and hexanol and was isolated as the top fraction of mint oils from distillation. A modification of the mineral oil distillation procedure has been proposed using a gas purge system to trap nitrosamines on a ThermoSorb/N cartridge. Many diene iron tricarbonyl complexes are known.f Butadiene iron tricarbonyl was first prepared in 1930 by Reihlen and co-workers [60], by treatment of iron pentacarbonyl with butadiene under pressure. It is a typical diene iron carbonyl complex being a yellow-brown oil which distils slowly at 60° in high vacuum. It is soluble in the common organic solvents and reacts with chlorinated hydrocarbons. Jakobsson and Sivik [47] also used ascorbic acid and a-tocopherol as antioxidants to prevent oxidation of fish oil. The a-tocopherol (0.06%) was incorporated in the oil phase, whereas the ascorbic acid was solubilized in the aqueous phase of the w/o microemulsion, whose composition was 77% fish oil, 20% distilled monoglyceride, and 3% aqueous phase. Oxidation was monitored by measuring the peroxide and anisidine values. A drastic reduction in oxidation was observed when antioxidants were incorporated in the microemulsion system. Oxidation was found to decrease further when ascorbic acid was dissolved in glycerol instead of water. A possible reason for this decrease in oxidation is that there is high internal mobility among the molecules and very short distances between the two phases. This promotes the internal mixing and the ability of the antioxidants to meet and scavenge the free radicals. [Pg.422]
