Dilation of pupil

Symptoms of intoxication in humans caused by accidental ingestion of Kou-Wen plants have been described as follows. The effect on the digestive system starts with loss of appetite and turn of the stomach, and continues to severe abdominal pain and intestinal bleeding. The effect on the respiratory system presents as breathing difficulties which finally lead to death by respiratory failure. The effect on muscle innervation usually results in generalized muscular weakness and paralysis of the limbs. The effect on the circulatory system starts with heartbeat disorders and a drop in blood pressure, but heart failure is not a common cause of death. In addition to dilation of pupils, a drop in body temperature and proliferation of white blood cells have also been obseryed (70). [Pg.136]

The adverse reactions are due to the peripheral muscarinic blockade and central actions. The general side effects include dry mouth, difficulty is swallowing, thirst, dry skin, skin rash, flushed skin etc. It also produces constipation, urinary retention, impotence, difficulty in micturition, tachycardia, palpitation, postural hypotension, dilatation of pupil, photophobia, blurred vision, dizziness, fatigue, anxiety and tremors etc. [Pg.163]

Mescaline is a psychedelic agent, causing hallucinations. It promotes psychosis in predisposed individuals. The mechanism of action probably involves its function as serotonin 5-HT agonist (Nichols 1986). Toxic symptoms include drowsiness, dilation of pupil, hyperreflexia, and restlessness. These symptoms progress with increasing doses, resulting in euphoria, distorted perceptions, and hallucinations. Such an illusion effect in humans may be manifested from intramuscular administration of about 150 mg of mescaline. The toxicity of this alkaloid, is otherwise, moderate, rarely causing death from overdose. [Pg.229]

An extremely toxic organophosphorus pesticide cholinesterase inhibitor. Toxic effects are similar to those of monocrotophos. Toxic symptoms include headache, dizziness, muscle spasms, blurred vision, dilation of pupil. [Pg.795]

The LD50 of an intraperitoneally administered ethanol extract of shepherd s purse in rats is 1000 mg/kg (Sharma et al. 1978). Other LD50 values of shepherd s purse (type of extract not available in English language information) are 1500 mg/kg for intraperitoneal administration and 3100 mg/kg for subcutaneous administration. Symptoms of toxicity included sedation, dilation of pupils, paralysis of hind limbs, respiratory difficulty, and death (Jurisson 1971). Fractions of an ethanol extract of shepherd s purse in mice showed "low" toxicity (Kuroda and Takagi 1969). [Pg.163]

A review of pennyroyal toxicity identified 22 adverse events from 1883 to 1996, most of which involved oral consumption of the essential oil at doses greater than 10 ml. Four cases had fatal outcomes the remaining cases had mild to severe outcomes ranging from nausea, dizziness, and dilation of pupils to respiratory depression, generalized seizures, and... [Pg.567]

Overdose of peach kernel, twig, or leaf (standard dose is a decoction of 4.5-10 g of the kernel) may result in poisoning. In children under five, 5 to 10 kernels have caused adverse effects, and 20 kernels have been lethal (Bensky et al. 2004). Symptoms of overdose are similar to cyanide poisoning, including nausea, vomiting, irritation of the gastrointestinal tract, headache, dizziness, weakness, blurred vision, increased heart rate, and difficulty breathing. In more severe cases, symptoms may include incontinence of the urine or stool, loss of consciousness, dilation of pupils, absence of pupillary reflexes, severe spasms, cyanosis, and shock (Bensky et al. 2004). [Pg.707]
