Bacteria are likely precipitants in many other cases including Escherichia coli, Salmonella species, Shigella species, Vibrio cholerae, and Clostridium difficile. The term dysentery has often been used to describe some of these bacterial infections when associated with serious occurrences of bloody diarrhea. Additionally, acute diarrheal conditions can be prompted by parasites-protozoa such as Entamoeba histolytica, Microsporidium, Giardia lamblia, and Cryptosporidium parvum. Most of these infectious agents can be causes of traveler s diarrhea, a common malady alflicting travelers worldwide. It usually occurs during or just after travel subsequent to the ingestion of fecally-contaminated food or water. It has an abrupt onset but usually subsides within 2 to 3 days. [Pg.311]

Ischemic colitis has been observed in some patients taking tegaserod. The drug should be discontinued promptly if rectal bleeding, bloody diarrhea, or worsening abdominal pain occurs. [Pg.320]

Blood in stool indicates the possibility of inflammatory mucosal disease of the colon. Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) is an important cause of bloody diarrhea in the United States. [Pg.1117]

EHEC are the pathogenic subgroup of Stx-producing E. coli (STEC). Acute hemorrhagic colitis has been associated mainly with the 0157 H7 serotype. This serotype has been responsible for larger outbreaks of infection, has higher rates of complications, and appears to be more pathogenic than non-EHEC STEC strains. The spectrum of disease associated with E. coli 0157 H7 includes bloody diarrhea, which is seen in as many as 95% of patients, nonbloody diarrhea, hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. [Pg.1121]

Consider quinolonc for suspected shigellosis in adults (fever, inflammation) macrolidc for suspected resistant Campylobacter avoid antimotility drugs, sulfonamides or quinolones if suspected EHEC (afebrile, bloody diarrhea). [Pg.30]

Initial signs and symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, and fever followed by frequent watery stools. Within a few days, patients experience a decrease in fever, severe abdominal pain, and tenderness prior to the development of bloody diarrhea and other signs of dysentery. [Pg.444]

Antibiotics have no effect on the duration of fever or diarrhea, and their frequent use increases the likelihood of resistance and the duration of fecal shedding. Antibiotics should be used in neonates or infants younger than 6 months, patients with primary or secondary immunodeficiency, severely symptomatic patients with fever and bloody diarrhea, and patients after splenectomy. [Pg.445]

Antibiotics are warranted in patients who present with high fevers, severe bloody diarrhea, prolonged illness (greater than 1 week), pregnancy, and immunocompromised states, including human immunodeficiency virus infection. [Pg.446]

Intestinal anthrax initially produces nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and fever. The disease progresses with increasing abdominal pain and vomiting of blood. Bloody diarrhea can develop and may be accompanied by fluid buildup in the abdominal cavity outside the intestines. [Pg.96]

However, I was present when antibiotics were introduced into feeds on farms. It was at a time, in 1950, when bloody diarrhea caused obvious suffering and death in young pigs, when chickens died in thousands, suffocated by air-sac disease, and baby calves perished from scours. These various forms of acute distress were rapidly alleviated by antibiotics. The diseases preceded the use of antibiotics. [Pg.124]

The lowest LDso reported for q clohex-imide is 2mg/kg after oral administration in the rat. In animal experiments, cycloheximide is irritating to the skin and eyes. Animals given toxic doses exhibit salivation, bloody diarrhea, tremors, and excitement leading to death from cardiovascular collapse. ... [Pg.198]

Other vasospasm-related events Peripheral vascular ischemia and colonic ischemia with abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea have been reported with 5-HT- agonists. [Pg.965]

OTC use Bloody diarrhea body temperature greater than 101°F. [Pg.1420]

Intolerance/Colitis exacerbation Mesalamine has been implicated in the production of an acute intolerance syndrome or exacerbation of colitis characterized by cramping, acute abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea, and occasionally fever, headache, malaise, pruritus, conjunctivitis, and rash. Symptoms usually abate when mesalamine is discontinued. [Pg.1424]

Ischemic colitis Ischemic colitis and other forms of intestinal ischemia have been reported in patients receiving tegaserod during marketed use of the drug. Discontinue tegaserod immediately in patients who develop symptoms of ischemic colitis, such as rectal bleeding, bloody diarrhea, or new or worsening abdominal pain. [Pg.1434]

Colitis Ulcerative and hemorrhagic/ischemic colitis, sometimes fatal, has been observed within 12 weeks of starting alpha interferon treatment. Abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and fever are the typical manifestations of colitis. [Pg.1989]

Clindamycin shows in vitro activity against Pro-pionibacterium acnes and topically applied clindamycin is effective for the treatment of acne. Approximately 10% of an applied dose is absorbed. In spite of this absorption pseudo-membranous colitis with bloody diarrhea is seldom seen. [Pg.480]
