Several large applications for one-component moisture-cure urethane adhesives are available. Polymeric MDI is an exceptional binder for wood products, such as oriented strand board and particleboard. One-component urethane windshield adhesives are used almost exclusively in both the OEM and automotive aftermarket. One-part urethane adhesives are used to assemble the sidewalls for recreational vehicles (RV s), manufactured housing, and mobile homes. In construction applications, one-part urethanes are used to bond metal doors, hardwood flooring, panels, and partitions. [Pg.781]

Since the possible variations in binder alone are limitless, it is possible to produce an infinite number of paints. As the range of raw materials available to the formulator becomes wider, their chemical purity is continually being improved. Mathematical models of binders can be constructed using computers and it is usually possible to predict fairly accurately the properties of a particular formulation before it is made. Asphalt concrete is primarily used as a structural pavement surface constructed over a subgrade and a subbase. It is designed to support the traffic load and distribute the load over the roadbed. Asphalt concrete pavements can be constructed using hot mix or cold mix asphalt. Hot mix asphalt is a mixture of tine and coarse aggregate with asphalt cement binder that is mixed, placed, and compacted in a heated condition. Cold mix asphalt is a mixture of emulsified asphalt and aggregate, produced, placed, and compacted at ambient air temperature. Cold mix asphalt pavement usually requires an overlay of hot mix asphalt or surface treatment to resist traffic action. [Pg.180]

In paintings, amino acid racemisation depends upon the presence of albuminous binders, such as blood or egg white. The ability to apply this technique is based on the observation that the number of amino acids present in proteins decreases over time. Decay curves are constructed of paint samples of known age. The first CNT-modified electrode was reported by Britto et al. in 1996 to study the oxidation of dopamine [16]. The CNT-composite electrode was constructed with bro-moform as the binder. The cyclic voltammetry showed a high degree of reversibility in the redox reaction of dopamine (see Fig. 15.3). Valentini and Rubianes have reported another type of CNT paste electrode by mixing CNTs with mineral oil. In flame retarding nonwovens, the contribution of components may not be additive. Rather, the interaction of binder, flame retardant, and substrate is critical in the performance of the flame retardant nonwoven. Similarly, the flammability of a binder film or the flammability of a flame retardant coated woven cloth often do not predict the flame retardancy of the same binder or flame retardant on a nonwoven substrate of rayon or polyester. Actual data on a nonwovens substrate is the only accurate measure of a system s flame retardancy. For this study, two widely used substrates were selected. The first, lightweight rando rayon, is representative of material used in nurse caps, surgeon s masks, and miscellaneous coverstock. This material is constructed of 1 1/2 denier fiber, weighs 1 1/2 ounces per square yard, and is relatively dense web. Rayon as a material is water absorbent, burns rather than melts, and is readily flammable. This fiber ignites around 400°C(2) and has an oxygen index of about 19.0. Certain binders adhere well to rayon while others do not. Apparently, this lack of affinity for the substrate affects flame retardancy, as will be demonstrated later. [Pg.150]

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to test portable infrared spectroscopy for non-destructive analysis of ancient construction mortar. Mortar samples from the House of the Vestals, in Pompeii, Italy, were initially examined with traditional analytical techniques, including X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction and thin section analysis. These techniques were used to establish mineralogical and chemical profiles of the samples and to verify the results of experimental field methods. Results showed the lime-based binder was composed of calcite, and the volcanic sand aggregate contained clinopyroxene, plagioclase, sanidine and olivine crystals. [Pg.303]

Thermosets A number of thermosets have been used as adhesives. Phenolic resins were used as adhesives by Leo Baekeland in the early 1900s. Phenolic resins are still used to bind together thin sheets of wood to make plywood. Urea resins have been used since 1930 as binders for wood chips in the manufacture of particle board. Unsaturated polyester resins are used for body repair and PUs are used to bond polyester cord to rubber in tires, and vinyl film to particle board, and to function as industrial sealants. The market for tar-based road binders has declined considerably for a variety of reasons. Less crude tar is available and the profits from the sales of electrode pitch and wood-preservation creosote or creosote as carbon-black feedstock are higher than those from road tar. In most industrial countries, road construction in more recent years has been concentrated on high speed motorways. Concrete, petroleum bitumen, or lake asphalt are used in the construction of these motorways. Sulphur concrete (without additives) will typically have a near-linear stress-strain curve up to failure, which occurs explosively at a strain usually between 0.0005 and 0.002. The peak stress varies from 20 to 70 MPa depending on the mix design. Sulphur concrete is thus a strong but brittle concrete material the brittleness need not necessarily be a grave disadvantage cast iron was used for a long period of time as a construction material. Any modification to the stress-strain behaviour should be evaluated carefully to see whether the modification is potentially useful. Two different approaches have been used to modify stress-strain behaviour. The modifications are (a) polymerization of the binder 04, j>, 17) and (b) use of the thermodynamically stable orthorhombic sulphur as the binder with alteration of the bond behaviour (3, 18). Interlocking construction blocks are also a promising field for sulphur concretes. The various types of blocks produced allow easy construction. The close reproduction of mould shape is a major advantage mortarless construction has been employed, allowing use of unskilled labour.
