The functions of these different phases of sleep are not at all clear but chronic sleep deprivation does eventually lead to death. It seems to be the slow-wave component of sleep (SWS) that is vital and it is thought to serve a restorative purpose. This would be consistent with its greater occurrence during the early stages of the sleep cycle when hormone secretion supports anabolic metabolism. If subjects are wakened every time they enter a period of REM sleep (evidenced by the EEG) there appears to be no overt harmful effect on their behaviour. In fact, REM sleep deprivation has even been used, with some claims of success, as a treatment for minor depression. However, there is an unproven belief that REM sleep is important for memory consolidation.

Therefore, the chemical applications of biology to this sector have deeply contributed to that consolidation, leading the development of biotechnologies to a mature state. A list of biotechnological companies, exclusively associated to the Food and Pharmacy industries is included in Table 1. Those companies are not analyzed in this book and are only included for completeness purposes and to prevent the oil reader of useless search.

As the main theme of this meeting is to assess and consolidate past achievements in various key areas of inorganic/organo-metallic chemistry, with the objective of gazing deep and hard into the futuristic chemical crystal ball of the 21st century, the purpose of my presentation will be to focus attention on pivotal developments in the field of transition metal atom/metal cluster chemistry over the past decade and then to attempt to project and forecast some of the more promising directions that the area is likely to follow in the years ahead.

Molecular spectroscopic techniques have been widely used in pharmaceutical analysis for both qualitative (identification of chemical species) and quantitative purposes (determination of concentration of species in pharmaceutical preparations). In many cases, they constitute effective alternatives to chromatographic techniques as they provide results of comparable quality in a more simple and expeditious manner. The differential sensitivity and selectivity of spectroscopic techniques have so far dictated their specihc uses. While UV-vis spectroscopy has typically been used for quantitative analysis by virtue of its high sensitivity, infrared (IR) spectrometry has been employed mainly for the identihcation of chemical compounds on account of its high selectivity. The development and consolidation of spectroscopic techniques have been strongly influenced by additional factors such as the ease of sample preparation and the reproducibility of measurements, which have often dictated their use in quality control analyses of both raw materials and finished products. 

At the end of this meeting, a formal critique should be considered to consolidate lessons learned for future meetings. The critique should consider what went well and what changes could he made to improve future meetings. It would also be appropriate at the conclusion of the session to thank the participants for their contributions, to restate the purpose of the meeting, and to recap how and whether it was achieved. 

The purpose of die tests described on the paper of Missouri School of Mines (Ref 7) is to help in predicting expl performance in rock from performance in water. Four expls were tested both in water and in rock so that direct comparison of the results of the two methods of testing could be made. The rock tests were made at a granite quarry operated by the Consolidated Quarries Division of the Georgia Marble Co, near Lithonia, Ga. We recommend first that DoD consolidate authority for all its relationships with FDA related to drugs and biologies for CBW defense into a single OSD office. The two candidates for this responsibility are the ASD(HA) and the DATSD(CBD). Health Affairs lacks authority for research and development and acquisition it is therefore a poor candidate for being the primary OSD point of contact with FDA on acquisition-related issues. The primary FDA-related function of ASD(HA) for CBW defense is to determine the medical indications of use, both for licensed drugs and IND-classified drugs. Explanation of the caffeine-extraction plants, most of the commercial plants produce at least two different products. Plants were consolidated to what is thought to be the main product. Capacities are estimated on a twelve months operation basis, which is - at least for hops -higher than reality. The order of product groups is in terms of decreasing total extraction volume. The product groups Chemistry and Environmental Purposes contain both products from natural and artificial origins. Several plants with the same product at one site are counted as one. 

The purpose of an inventory is to consolidate basic knowledge about chemicals imported, used, and manufactured in a country and serve as an important basis for informed chemical management. Inventories are the usual instrument for identifying chemicals that are already in commerce in a particular country and serve as the trigger for new chemical review programs.

Leather dressing serves a number of important purposes.
