The unsaponifiables of woolwax, known as woolwax alcohols, are in considerable demand by cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Woolwax has a great affinity for water, of which it will absorb 25 to 30%. Refined woolwax is kneaded with water to produce a water-white, colorless oiiilmenL, known as hydrous lanolin or lanolin USP. Anhydrous lanolin is widely used in cosmetic creams, since it is readily absorbed by the skin. It is also used m leather dressings and shoe pastes, as a superfatting agent for toilet soap, as a protective coating for metals, etc. United States consumption of wool wax is about 1.5 million lb/year. [Pg.1747]

Leather dressing serves a number of important purposes. It can sometimes soften hard leather and help to prevent pieces breaking off, it consolidates powdering, and to some extent prevents absorption of sulfur dioxide. The last factor is an important one in the case of new leathers which have not started to rot. [Pg.24]

Use Soap stock, leather dressing, candles, greases, manufacture of stearic and oleic acids, animal feeds, abherent in tire molds. [Pg.1203]

Peanut seeds contain about 50% oil and 25% protein and provide about 2600 cal/lb. The compounds found in peanuts are used in paints, varnishes, lubricating oils, leather dressings, furniture polish, insecticides, and nitroglycerine. Soaps are made from the saponified oil as well as several cosmetic bases. The protein fraction is used in the textile fibers Ardil and Sarelon. The shells are used in plastics, wallboard, abrasives, and as a fuel. The chemicals furfural, xylose, cellulose, and mucilage are obtained from peanuts. The tops are used for hay, and the press cake is used for animal feed and fertilizer. [Pg.548]

USE in the synthesis of surface-active agents, vulcanization accelerators, pharmaceuticals. As emulsifying agent for cosmetic creams and lotions, mineral oil and peraffin wax emulsions, leather dressings, textile specialties, polishes, cleaning compounds, so-called soluble oils. [Pg.70]

Prodncts and Uses The substance used in soap stock, leather dressing, candles, greases, and in animal feeds. It is useful as a coating agent, emulsifying (stabilizes and maintains mixes) agent, formulation aid, and as a texturizer. Derived from animal (cattle) fat. [Pg.268]
