Antistatic compositions

Antistatic Compositions. Antistatic properties can be imparted to ABS polymers by coating the surface of the resin with surfactants or by incorporating surfactants into the resin by kneading. Further, it has been proposed to admix an epihalohydrin polymer or an ethylene oxide copolymer. [Pg.221]

Antistatic compositions are being sold for appHcation during household laundering to be added in the rinse cycle or during tumble drying. Most of... [Pg.295]

Any review devoted to conducting composites would be incomplete if the application fields of such composites were not described even if briefly. One of the first, if not the foremost, examples of the utilization of the CPCM is antistatic materials [1], For the materials of this kind resistivity q of less than 106 to 108 Ohm cm is not required, and this is achieved by introducing small amounts (several per cent) of a conducting filler, say, carbon black [4],... [Pg.142]

Most polymers are very good electrical insulating materials because of their chemical composition, i.e., their electrical conductivity is exceptionally low. Because of this important property, many plastics are used to produce electrically nonconductive parts. However, the high surface resistance leads to an unwanted property the material is prone to electrostatic charge accumulation. To facilitate dissipation of the charge, antistatic agents are incorporated, which combine with atmospheric moisture on the plastic surface to form a conductive film. [Pg.208]

Cellulosic, polyester, and acrylic fibers lubricated with a surfactant-based oiling composition containing an organic phosphorus ester neutralized with an amine showed less pilling, good antistatic properties, and anticorrosiveness. The phosphorus ester salts were hexyl phosphate trimethylamine salt, dodecamethy-lene caproate phosphonate ethylamine salt, and polyethylene glycol dodecyl ether phosphate dimethylamine salt [262]. [Pg.608]

An electric conductive rubber base containing carbon black is laminated with an electric conductive cover layer of phosphoric acid ester plasticizer and other ionic surfactants to prepare antistatic mats, where the covers have colors other than black. It is also reported that alkyl acid phosphates act as color stabilizer for rubber. Small amounts of phosphate esters are helpful in restoring reclaimed rubber to a workable viscosity [284,290]. Esters of phosphoric acid are used in the production of UV-stable and flame-retarded alkylbenzenesulfonate copolymer compositions containing aliphatic resins and showing a high-impact strength... [Pg.614]

The combination of a positive charge and reducibility of tetrazolium salts finds use as anticorrosion agents for metals.634,635 The y are components of an oxidant/etchant bath composition for silicon dioxide corrosion-resistant surfaces.636 They are also used as antistatic agents in polyamide... [Pg.278]

Hydrolysis of polyamide-based formulations with 6 N HC1 followed by TLC allows differentiation between a-aminocaproic acid (ACA) and hexamethylenedi-amine (HMD) (hydrolysis products of PA6 and PA6.6, respectively), even at low levels. The monomer composition (PA6/PA6.6 ratio) can be derived after chromatographic determination of the adipic acid (AA) content. Extraction of the hydrolysate with ether and derivatisa-tion allow the quantitative determination of fatty acids (from lubricants) by means of GC (Figure 3.27). Further HC1/HF treatment of the hydrolysis residue, which is composed of mineral fillers, CB and nonhydrolysable polymers (e.g. impact modifiers) permits determination of total IM and CB contents CB is measured quantitatively by means of TGA [157]. Acid hydrolysis of flame retarded polyamides allows to determine the adipic acid content (indicative of PA6.6) by means of HPLC, HCN content (indicative of melamine cyanurate) and fatty acid (indicative of a stearate) by means of GC [640]. Determination of ethylene oxide-based antistatic agents... [Pg.154]

Ionic liquids (ILs) are, together with water and supercritical fluids, one of the few alternative media for environmentally friendly processes, which seem to have more possibility of industrial application in the next 10 years. The range of demonstrated or proposed applications of ILs is extraordinary, going from their use as nonvolatile, non-flammable solvents in organic synthesis to catalysts, materials for aiding separations and gas capture, advanced heat transfer fluids, lubricants, antistatics, and so on [2 ]. Surpassing in magnitude the number of potential uses is the number of possible IL compositions, estimated to be in the billions [5]. The term ionic liquids includes all compounds composed exclusively by ions that are liquid... [Pg.178]

The antistatic agent, iV-di-[3-(stearoylamino)propyl]-7V-methylamine oxide, (I), was prepared by Baik et al. (3) and used as a fabric softer in fabric detergent compositions. [Pg.20]

Polyetheresteramide antistatic agents consisting of the reaction product of unde-canoic acid, hexamethylenediamine, dodecanedioic, and ethylene glycol were prepared by Linemann et al. (5) and blended with thermoplastic resins to form breathable polymer compositions. [Pg.20]

Compositions and functions of typical commercial products in the 2-alkyl-l-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-imidazolines series are given in Table 29. 2-Alkyl-l-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-imidazolines are used in hydrocarbon and aqueous systems as antistatic agents, corrosion inhibitors, detergents, emulsifiers, softeners, and viscosity builders. They are prepared by heating the salt of a carboxylic acid with (2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine at 150—160°C to form a substituted amide 1 mol water is eliminated to form the substituted imidazoline with further heating at 180—200°C. Substituted imidazolines yield three series of cationic surfactants by ethoxylation to form more hydrophilic products quatemization with benzyl chloride, dimethyl sulfate, and other alkyl halides and oxidation with hydrogen peroxide to amine oxides. [Pg.257]

Compositions of ABS polymers that contain a special ethylene oxide copolymer have been developed, which do not suffer from these drawbacks. The ethylene oxide copolymer consists of ethylene oxide and 1-naphthyl glycidyl ether. The copolymer a should have a high refractive index of more than 1.50. The presence of this copolymer in the ABS resin composition gives a product of remarkably improved surface appearance when the composition is subjected to injection molding. In addition, the resin composition has an excellent antistatic property (23). [Pg.222]

Examples of known phosphazene polymer blends are those in which phosphazenes with methylamino, trifluoroethoxy, phenoxy, or oligo-ethyleneoxy side groups form blends with poly(vinyl chloride), polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), or polyethylene oxide).97 100 IPNs have been produced from [NP(OCH2CH2OCH2CH2OCH3)2] (MEEP) and poly(methyl methacrylate).101-103 In addition, a special type of IPN has been reported in which a water-soluble polyphosphazene such as MEEP forms an IPN with a silicate or titanate network generated by hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane or tetraalkoxytitanane.104 These materials are polyphosphazene/ceramic composites, which have been described as suitable materials for the preparation of antistatic layers in the manufacture of photographic film. [Pg.93]
