These are difficult questions at best, yet the foundation for successful disaster recovery and the creation of disaster-resistant sustainable communities lies within them. As a nation, we must not succumb to the apathy factor as Dr. Erik Auf der Heide has described, but force ourselves to plan for the unexpected, prepare for the unlikely, and to establish sustainable community partnerships with effective avenues of communication. These discussions will most likely take place at the highest levels of our government—and no one is better prepared to contribute to this discussion than a nurse. 

Feature 13. Forge reliable and collaborative partnerships with the communities served, managers of critical interdependent infrastructure, response organizations, and local utilities. 

It is also important for chemical facilities to develop partnerships with the communities and customers they serve. Partnerships help to build credibility within communities and establish public confidence in utility operations. People who live near chemical facility structures can be the eyes and ears of the facility, and can be encouraged to notice and report changes in operating procedures or other suspicious behaviors. 

The company is interested in forming partnerships with industrial companies to conduct demonstration projects (Personal communication, John P. Russell, Vice President of ARC Sonics, 1996). No information is available regarding the costs associated with this technology. 

Develop effective voluntary partnerships with businesses, labor organizations, government agencies, and environmental/community groups to implement DfE projects and other pollution prevention activities. 

Working in partnership with the scientific community and commercial industry. NASA s Microgravity Research Program strives to increase understanding of the effects of gravity on biological, chemical and physical systems. 

Only public education can help stop illegal use of GBL and its deadly chemical cousins. The National Institute on Dmg Abuse (NIDA) is donating 54 million to warn teens, young adults, parents, educators, and public officials about the dangers of GBL and other club drugs, in partnership with Join Together, National Families in Action, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America. 

It has been 4 years since Sue entered into ajunior partnership with Mr. Burke, and at the end of next year, she will be majority owner of Professional Pharmacy. While the time has just flown by, Sue marvels at all she has learned about pharmacy practice from both the business and professional sides. Sue came to this realization shordy after her first scheduled meeting with this year s community pharmacy resident, Cindy Ryan.

There is a greater likelihood of attainment of separate compromises between neighboring countries and separate partnership with transnational corporations, international financial institutions and non-Black-Sea countries.

A recent advance in pharmacy residency training is expansion of residency accredifafion to include community and managed care pharmacy residencies. In partnership with the APhA for community pharmacy and the AMCP for managed care, the ASHP has established residency standards and reviews of fhese programs. Evaluating the program s impact on public trust is more complicated. Although Responsible Care may have helped arrest the precipitous decline in trust that marked the early to mid-1980s, industry polls continue to reveal low overall levels of public confidence in the industry. To address the concerns of its diverse stakeholders, the chemical industry has formed hundreds of community advisory councils and partnerships with community and environmental activists in an attempt to hear their points of view (see Section 6.7). While individual companies report improved community relations and while the industry is much more open than it has ever been, polls indicate that it remains low in the public s esteem (Moffet, 1999). 

In several ways, family physicians are particnlarly well suited to respond to terrorism. First, family physicians are widely dispersed, in rural and urban areas, making them accessible for patients wherever manmade or natural catastrophic events might occnr. Second, family physicians provide continuity care, essential for the appropriate care of patients and families with ongoing physical and emotional outcomes from violent events. Third, family physicians provide comprehensive care, and can take care of most of the health problems, including emotional issues, facing victims of terrorism. Fonrth, family physicians understand how to coordinate care for patients, and can refer victims of mass disasters to other appropriate services as necessary. Most importantly, family physicians understand how to provide care in the context of family and community (22). As the events of September/October 2001 demonstrated, terrorism affects entire communities, whether or not individuals directly experience physical outcomes from the attacks. Family physicians, who nnderstand how their patients and families interact with their community, can help identify and treat problems at the community level. Although horrible, past terrorist events illustrate the pivotal role that family physicians play, working in partnership with public health officials to protect and promote the health of families and commnnities.
