Responsibility, social

These programs, processes, and practices which promote and facilitate social responsibility include the following items  [Pg.136]

Most companies must learn to deal more creatively with local officials and public opinion. The social responsibility of companies can become an extremely important issue. Companies shoiild apply thoughtfulness and skill to the timing and conduc t of pubhc hearings. Management must recognize that local officials have views and constituencies that go beyond attracting new jobs. [Pg.2155]

Corporate environmentalism is an evolving concept for environmental protection. In this case, business takes a pro-active stance independent of regulatory authorities. This can be in recognition of social responsibilities, but is more successful when compelled by competition in the market place. Thus, a hrm can conscientiously target environmentally aware consumers (through marketing environmentally friendly products or processes) or can be better placed for hnancial support from ethical investment funding bodies. [Pg.90]

The consuming public must assume that the producer of a product has shown reasonable consideration for the safety, correct quantity, proper labeling, and other social aspects of the product. Since the 1960s these types of important concerns have expanded and been reinforced by a recognition of the consumer s right to know as well as by concerns for conservation, ecology, antilittering, and the like. Numerous safety-related and socially responsible laws have been enacted and more are on the way. [Pg.285]

Micro-reaction technology has just left its infancy and started commercialization. Consequently, we do not know about the social response to micro reactors in general, i.e. the micro-reactor control circuif in the sense outlined above has not yet developed, but we do know something of the response of chemical industry and customers to what the micro-reactor offers. [Pg.79]

Experiences of this type are the basis of the DPSIR ( driving forces - pressure -state - impact - response ) approach (Fig. 1), which has been introduced in environmental policy as a link between ecological problems and economic and social responses [43]. [Pg.162]

Sustainability overall objective for human beings formulated by the United Nations in the 1990s is to ensure sustainable development for future generations chemical companies have already started to translate this objective into their industry practice with respects to products developed and sold, energy and natural resource efficiency in their processes, climate protection, corporate social responsibility for the workforce as well as stakeholders in production and consuming areas sustainability as an objective also already inspired operations research and supply chain literature (see for example Zhou et al. 2000 Al-Sharrah et al. 2002)... [Pg.85]

The industry is asking whether this is what even the most passionate environmentalist really wants - now that there is an unequivocal industry commitment to phase-out (on a sensible time-scale) now that mercury emissions have been reduced to a level which is harmless to the environment and given that the industry does have important environmental improvement projects that it would like to carry out - is this a socially responsible and sustainable way of spending our resources ... [Pg.42]

An oil company scientist once said that he was happy his company was reprimanded for some of their advertisements he said the chemists in his lab were somewhat piqued that management never showed ads to scientists to check for accuracy they left it entirely in the hands of Madison Avenue. He was convinced that commenting on ads was part of the chemist s work and social responsibility. [Pg.91]

Since SYSCO does not itself manufacture, a quality assurance team of more than 180 professionals determines specifications for each own-brand item and also sets criteria for raw materials and for the standards that manufacturers and processors must follow for food safety, quality, and consistency, as well as for social responsibility and supplier codes of conduct. This quality assurance team identifies and establishes supply sources and audits those suppliers to enforce SYSCO s strict standards for various factors like facility conditions and sanitary measures. Inspectors are at the plants as bacon comes off the production line, or follow produce from field to cooler to assure proper holding temperatures and product integrity. SYSCO s program is unmatched in the food industry. The number of people and level of resources committed to supporting the integrity of the products are far superior to those of other industry competitors, who may devote merely a handful of personnel to these tasks, if they are undertaken at all. [Pg.81]

Concerns over the use of food stocks for fuel sources have heightened the awareness of the general public with regard to the socially responsible use of bioresources [41]. [Pg.325]

Green ethics, or the social responsibility to improve the environment, was another curriculum item that came up in discussion several times. In addition to many of the attendees who deem green ethics important, it is also information the students want. Vanasupa said that many students are very attracted to the idea of making a difference and service to humanity. According to Vanasupa, ethics have been a peripheral subject in many schools and having the material as an integral part of the curriculum is a goal with a variety of solutions available. [Pg.40]

Encouragement of the pharmaceutical industry to take a more active, direct, long-term responsibility for the safety of their products and customers, through reallocation of priorities and funds, as part of corporate social responsibility. [Pg.243]
