Coated Textiles

Air-inflated structures are very often made of coated textiles. They are hall constructions that derive their internal stability from overpressure. This design needs a permanent air supply to maintain the necessary overpressure. Therefore, the maintenance of such a hall requires a high expenditure of energy. This was the reason that air-inflated structures were replaced by new construction principles, for example in tent constructions, sail constructions, radial rope nets, orthogonal rope nets, scaffold halls (wood or steel scaffolds), and changeable roofs. [Pg.323]

The terms describing the different construction principles make clear that it is always a construction in which textiles are subject to pre-stress. These structures are also known as membrane roofs. In addition, the coated textile always represents a separation between the formed interior and the environment, creating the following demands on coated textiles  [Pg.323]

Poly(vinyl alcohol) will function as a non-ionic surface active agent and is used in suspension polymerisation as a protective colloid. In many applications it serves as a binder and thickener is addition to an emulsifying agent. The polymer is also employed in adhesives, binders, paper sizing, paper coatings, textile sizing, ceramics, cosmetics and as a steel quenchant. [Pg.391]

In November 1997, Ferrari (France) invited Solvay to help them to solve a problem of recycling PVC coated textile for light mobile structures, especially ones used for shortterm applications (advertising). The Vinyloop is aphysical recycling process making use of an organic solvent to separate the PVC compound from the other materials in a PVC composite. It is a closed loop process the solvent is completely recycled. Aspects outlined include history and a description of the process, precipitated PVC compound evaluation and financial data... [Pg.32]

Increase viscosity, e.g. magnesium oxide in unsaturated polyester resins increases the viscosity so much that a liquid resin becomes a tackfree solid, suitable for making sheet moulding compound (SMC). A relatively high viscosity is also desirable for latex compounds used to coat textiles. [Pg.785]

In the category of silicone coatings used for surface modification of the specific substrates, functional silicone fluids are often used, which can selectively interact with the chemical groups of the substrate, thus modifying its surface properties. The use of functional silicones in the textile industry has been discussed in a number of recent publications.5 421 422 The use of different types of high-performace silicone-coated textiles, which include elastomers and resins, has recently been reviewed.423 The use of functional silicones in personal-care products, for example, in shampoos and hair conditioners, mentioned before,381 provides another well-known example. [Pg.676]

This book covers what are broadly called plastics materials. Composites based on long fibres and thermosetting resins are mentioned but not studied specifically. Elastomers, coatings, textiles and adhesives are generally excluded but attention is drawn to a companion volume on the life prediction of rubbers [1]. [Pg.16]

Another group of chlorinated hydrocarbons comprises those made from paraffin wax. Major applications are in extreme pressure lubricants and as extenders and plasticizers in surface coatings and in vinyl plastics. The chlorinated waxes were also widely applied in flameproofing cotton fabrics, which led to large consumption by the military. It is believed that current military requirements for flame-resistant fabrics will be met by vinyl sheeting of vinyl-coated textile products, so that the World War II demand for the halogenated waxes will not be repeated. [Pg.293]

Urea is also used as a protein food supplement for ruminants, in melamine production, and as an ingredient in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals (e.g., barbiturates), synthetic resins, plastics (urethanes), adhesives, coatings, textile antishrink agents, and ion exchange resins. It is an intermediate in the manufacture of ammonium sulfamate, sulfamic acid, and pthalocyanines. [Pg.537]

Silver coated textiles Recently, a new mode of antibacterial/antimicrobial therapy in AD has been introduced the use of antibacterial silver coated textiles. In an open-labeled controlled side-to-side comparative trial, silver-coated textiles were able to reduce S. aureus-colonization significantly already two days after initiation lasting until the end of the treatment. Even seven days after cessation, S. aureus-density remained significantly lower compared to the baseline. Clinical improvement paralleled with reduction of 5. aw/mv-colonization.105... [Pg.399]

Acrylic acid is almost exclusively used directly, or after conversion to an ester, as a monomer. Acrylate esters are produced by normal esterification processes. However, in dealing with acrylic acid, acrolein, or acrylates, unusual care must be taken to minimize losses due to polymerization and other side reactions such as additions of water, acids, or alcohols across the reactive double bond. Polyacrylic acids find use in superabsorbers, dispersants, and water treatment. The polyesters are used in surface coatings, textile fibers, adhesives, and various other applications. [Pg.380]

The combination of the textile fabric and the polymer matrix on it results in interesting new properties. Thus coated textiles can be both flexible (similar to fabrics) and water- and air-tight (similar to films). Generally, the textile component provides strength and/or flexibility, the polymer coating delivers thermal... [Pg.24]
