TEXTILE COATING

Another textile use of acryUc polymers is fabric finishing, to impart a desired hand or feel, or to aid soil release, or for permanent-press features. Copolymers of acrylate esters with acryUc or methacrylic acid serve as thickeners for a variety of textile coating formulations (see Textiles, finishing). 

MIBK is a highly effective separating agent for metals from solutions of their salts and is used in the mining industries to extract plutonium from uranium, niobium from tantalum, and zirconium from hafnium (112,113). MIBK is also used in the production of specialty surfactants for inks (qv), paints, and pesticide formulations, examples of which are 2,4,7,9-tetramethyl-5-decyn-4,7-diol and its ethoxylated adduct. Other appHcations include as a solvent for adhesives and wax/oil separation (114), in leather (qv) finishing, textile coating, and as a denaturant for ethanol formulations. 

The ready availabiUty of computers has led to the detailed analysis of the colorant formulation problems faced every day by the textile, coatings, ceramics, polymer, and related industries. The resulting computer match prediction has produced improved color matching and reductions in the amounts of colorants required to achieve a specific result with accompanying reductions of cost. Detailed treatments have been given for dyes and for pigments (13,29,30). 

Soxtherm can be used for a variety of substrates, such as plasticisers, and additives in plastics and rubber, fibre and textile coatings, colorants on textiles, fat in food, oils and lubricants, fertiliser coatings, etc. Specific reports are scarce. EPA method 3541 has adopted automated Soxhlet extraction [151]. 

Cold cure silicone rubbers and available as pastes. These pastes are mixed with an organometallic catalyst and silicate and cured at room temperature. These are used as adhesives, and as encapsulating materials for electronic components. They are also used for textile coating and in moulds. 

The lotus-like and honeycomb-like aligned CNT films with a combination of micro- and nanostructures were also reported (Sun et al., 2003 Choi et al., 2003). They all displayed super-hydrophobic properties as shown in Fig. 9.14. The well-aligned CNT-polymer films or coatings have potential on applications such as super-hydrophobic surfaces to textiles, coatings, gene delivery, micro-fluid channels, non-wetting liquid transfer, and so forth. 

Uses. Polyurethane paints and varnishes as an elastomer in casting compounds, flexible textile coatings... 

Chlorination of natural rubber (NR) is carried out with chlorine in carbon tetrachloride solution at 60-90°C to yield a chlorinated rubber containing about 65% chlorine, which corresponds to 3.5 chlorine atoms per repeat unit. The process is complex and includes chlorine addition to the double bond, substitution at allylic positions, and cyclization. Chlorinated rubber has high moisture resistance and is resistant to most aqueous reagents (including mineral acids and bases). It is used in chemical- and corrosion-resistant paints, printing inks, and textile coatings. Bromination of butyl rubber is also practiced [Parent et al., 2002].

Latex applications include adhesives, fibre binders (such as in paper and textiles), coatings (such as in paints, coated papers, coated fabrics, coated flooring, and coated insulation), dipping-produced goods (such as balloons, bladders, gloves, and tubing), solid foam products (such as for cushioned furniture), and as a constituent in building materials (such as mortars and concrete) [791].
