Chemical categorization

It is mentioned that the TTC concept has been incorporated in the risk assessment processes in a number of regulatory schemes as a scientifically sound tool to justify waiving or generation of animal data. It is also stressed that, in contrast to approaches such as read-across or chemical categorization, the use of the TTC is not focused or limited to the identification of potential hazards but also provides a quantitative estimate of potency. [Pg.202]

The schedule of chemicals (refer to Chapter 2 for the list) is found in the Annex on Chemicals of the CWC. The schedule of chemicals categorizes the CWC-regulated chemicals into three schedules (1, 2, and 3) according to the chemical properties, toxicity, application, and level of regulation by the CWC. The number of analytical data that is in the version of the OCAD released in October 2002 is presented in Table 1. [Pg.136]

For starters, if you manufacture or import chemicals then the registration process defined under TSCA must be completed. If you use chemicals categorized as toxic then your process should not endanger the environment or your workforce. You are responsible if these chemicals are inadvertently released into the environment in any way or misused by you. In addition, you are responsible for the final disposal of the chemical and any waste products. This is to say that you must plan ahead on how to safely use the chemical, properly clean up spills or contamination, and properly dispose of the chemical. Some people call this a cradle-to-grave procedure or process. [Pg.283]

CODESSA can compute or import over 500 molecular descriptors. These can be categorized into constitutional, topological, geometric, electrostatic, quantum chemical, and thermodynamic descriptors. There are automated procedures that will omit missing or bad descriptors. Alternatively, the user can manually define any subset of structures or descriptors to be used. [Pg.354]

A comprehensive search (295) of the STORET water quaUty database, maintained by the U.S. EPA Office of Water, is used to evaluate the potential water quaUty implications of various herbicides. This database contains information on contamination of surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) suppUes. The data are provided to give a general impression of the occurrence of a given herbicide in SW and GW (269). The U.S. EPA scheme for categorizing a chemical s carcinogenic potential is used for herbicides for which healthy advisory information (HA) is available. The U.S. EPA is continually issuing HAs for various environmental contaminants HAs available in Reference 269 were used in preparation of this article. [Pg.49]

The uses of propylene may be loosely categorized as refinery or chemical purpose. In the refinery, propylene occurs in varying concentrations in fuel-gas streams. As a refinery feedstock, propylene is alkylated by isobutane or dimerized to produce polymer gasoHne for gasoHne blending. Commercial chemical derivatives include polypropylene, acrylonitrile, propylene oxide, isopropyl alcohol, and others. In 1992, ca 64% of U.S. propylene suppHes were consumed in the production of chemicals (74). Polypropylene has been the largest consumer of propylene since the early 1970s and is likely to dominate propylene utilization for some time. [Pg.128]

Chemical Properties. Reactions of quaternaries can be categorized iato three types (169) Hoffman eliminations, displacements, and rearrangements. Thermal decomposition of a quaternary ammonium hydroxide to an alkene, tertiary amine, and water is known as the Hoffman elimination (eq. la) (170). This reaction has not been used extensively to prepare olefins. Some cycHc olefins, however, are best prepared this way (171). Exhaustive methylation, followed by elimination, is known as the Hoffman degradation and is important ia the stmctural determination of unknown amines, especially for alkaloids (qv) (172). [Pg.377]

Absorption processes are categorized based on the mechanism of absorption, as either chemical or physical. In addition, a number of hybrid absorption processes featuring both chemical and physical solvents have been developed. [Pg.210]

Under current regulations, chemicals allowed for use in various European countries (Table 3) are either fully Hcensed for aquacultural use (oxytetracycline, oxolinic acid) or can be prescribed by veterinarians if they are Hcensed for use on other food animals (14—16). In addition, previously unHcensed chemicals that are appHed to the water (topicals) may now be used under a grandfather clause if no one questions their safety. The question of whether a chemical is a medicine or a pesticide has also been addressed. Eor example, dichlorvos (Nuvan 500 EC) was initially designated as a pesticide in the United Kingdom, but was later categorized as a medicine. A similar product, trichlorfon (Masoten), was treated the same way in the United States. [Pg.323]

Almost all cooling water system deposits are waterborne. It would be impossible to list each deposit specifically, but general categorization is possible. Deposits are precipitates, transported particulate, biological materials, and a variety of contaminants such as grease, oil, process chemicals, and silt. Associated corrosion is fundamentally related to whether deposits are innately aggressive or simply serve as an occluding medium beneath which concentration cells develop. An American... [Pg.71]

Production of major inorganic chemicals in the United State exceeds 200 million metric tons per year produced in over 1300 plants (9). These inorganic chemicals may be categorized as acids, bases, fertilizer, chlorine, and bromine. [Pg.497]

SALI compares fiivorably with other major surface analytical techniques in terms of sensitivity and spatial resolution. Its major advantj e is the combination of analytical versatility, ease of quantification, and sensitivity. Table 1 compares the analytical characteristics of SALI to four major surfiice spectroscopic techniques. These techniques can also be categorized by the chemical information they provide. Both SALI and SIMS (static mode only) can provide molecular fingerprint information via mass spectra that give mass peaks corresponding to structural units of the molecule, while XPS provides only short-range chemical information. XPS and static SIMS are often used to complement each other since XPS chemical speciation information is semiquantitative however, SALI molecular information can potentially be quantified direedy without correlation with another surface spectroscopic technique. AES and Rutherford Backscattering (RBS) provide primarily elemental information, and therefore yield litde structural informadon. The common detection limit refers to the sensitivity for nearly all elements that these techniques enjoy. [Pg.560]

The characteristics of a chemical or substance that would categorize it as a reactive material include (1) it reacts violently with water, (2) it forms potentially explosive mixtures with water, or (3) when mixed with water or other chemicals, it generates... [Pg.173]

Equipment used to process, store, or handle highly hazardous chemicals must be designed constructed, installed and maintained to minimize the risk of release. A systematic, scheduled, test and maintenance program is preferred over "breakdown" maintenance " that could compromise safety. Elements of a mechanical integrity program include 1) identification and categorization of equipment and instrumentation, 2) documentation of manufacturer data on mean time to failure, 3 ) test and inspection frequencies, 4) maintenance procedures, 5) training of maintenance personnel, 6) test criteria, and 7) documentation of test and inspection results. [Pg.72]

Numerous processes have been developed for gas sweetening based on a variety of chemical and physical principles. These processes can be categorized by the principles used in the process to separate the acid gas and the natural gases as follows ... [Pg.156]

Tliis categor> includes chemicals reacting vitli otlier chemicals or materials and tlie decomposition of unstable chemicals (e.g tlie reaction of some substances witli water or moist air or witli strong oxidizing and reducing agents). [Pg.218]

In contrast, RNA occurs in multiple copies and various forms (Table 11.2). Cells contain up to eight times as much RNA as DNA. RNA has a number of important biological functions, and on this basis, RNA molecules are categorized into several major types messenger RNA, ribosomal RNA, and transfer RNA. Eukaryotic cells contain an additional type, small nuclear RNA (snRNA). With these basic definitions in mind, let s now briefly consider the chemical and structural nature of DNA and the various RNAs. Chapter 12 elaborates on methods to determine the primary structure of nucleic acids by sequencing methods and discusses the secondary and tertiary structures of DNA and RNA. Part rV, Information Transfer, includes a detailed treatment of the dynamic role of nucleic acids in the molecular biology of the cell. [Pg.338]

A question which has been keenly argued for a number of years is the following if it were possible continuously to vary one or more of the parameters determining the nature of a system such as a molecule or a crystal, say the effective nuclear charges, then would the transition from one extreme bond type to another take place continuously, or would it show discontinuities For example, are there possible all intermediate bond types between the pure ionic bond and the pure electron-pair bond With the development of our knowledge of the nature of the chemical bond it has become evident that this question and others like it cannot be answered categorically. It is necessary to define the terms used and to indicate the point of view adopted and then it may turn out, as with this question, that no statement of universal application can be made. [Pg.299]

Collectively, the findings in experimental animals are insufficient to categorize methyl parathion as an endocrine-disrupting chemical. [Pg.105]
