Via is the recipient of numerous awards, including two internal GE awards for technical excellence and productivity. In 1994 he was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the recipient the first Department of Energy Office of Industrial Technology s Industrial Partnership Award (1999). He authored a chapter for the American Chemical Society s millennium publication Chemical Research—2000 Beyond. In addition, he serves as a consultant or on review committees for the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, the National Academy of Sciences and the American Chemical Society. In 1999, Via was selected to the Chemical Industry Executive Steering Group for the DOE-OIT. [Pg.127]

Huo looked at his fellow generals, gathering around with interest. My lord, I authorised one of our remote engineer battalions to steer groups of mines into the outskirts of Sverdlovsk. Their IR sensors are crude, but I expected them to give an approximation of enemy dispositions in advance of any fuller reconnaissance. The data indicates a complete absence of armour. ... [Pg.152]

Dioxins in food and the environment have been intensively studied over the past twenty years (see for example Steering Group on Chemical Aspects of Food Surveillance, 1992a). The term dioxins has come to be used for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and in some cases also polychlorinated dibenzofurans. Both of these are ubiquitous environmental contaminants. They are highly resistant to breakdown in the environment. They are particularly difficult to study because of the large number of substances involved and the very low levels of detection needed. Nevertheless, much surveillance work has been done on polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, particularly 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-... [Pg.6]

Surveillance and other research on residues of industrial organic chemicals in food is at a much earlier stage than work on metals in food. From the list of about 50,000 such chemicals one needs to identify those that are likely to contaminate food and pose a risk to consumers. This is by no means an easy task. The sort of factors that one might consider are as follows (Steering Group on Food Surveillance, 1988) ... [Pg.7]

There is evidence that carcinogenic N-nitrosamines can be formed during the production of alcoholic beverages, fermented foods and cured meats (Steering Group on Chemical Aspects of Food Surveillance, 1992b). [Pg.7]

An industrial Steering Group has been established to determine the priority areas for the cluster and the mechanisms required to achieve its objectives. It was proposed to carry out analyses on representative processes to identify the potential business benefits arising from application of PI technologies. [Pg.479]

The size of this steering group is important, small but with the correct level of expertise and authority to gain the respect of the project teams. Ideally the group should have the following components ... [Pg.252]
