Generic research

The United States occupies the preeminent scientific position in the "new" biology. If America is to derive the maximum benefit of its investment in basic biological research—whether in the form of better health, improved agriculture, a cleaner environment, or more efficient production of chemicals—it must also assume a preeminent position in biochemical and biomedical engineering. This can be accomplished by carrying out generic research in the following areas ... 

The several industrial applications reported in the hterature prove that the energy of supersonic flow can be successfully used as a tool to enhance the interfacial contacting and intensify mass transfer processes in multiphase reactor systems. However, more interest from academia and more generic research activities are needed in this fleld, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the interface creation under the supersonic wave conditions, to create rehable mathematical models of this phenomenon and to develop scale-up methodology for industrial devices.

The research program is divided between generic projects and directed or proprietary research activities. The results from the generic research program belong to all member companies, while directed activities are for the benefit of individual companies. For example, directed funds may be used to contract for research directly with an individual faculty member, or for fellowships, or for work performed in special EPIC supported applied research facilities, which are located at the universities and are financed by EPIC. 

The generic research portfolio presently includes over sixty projects, representing an investment of 5 million, and it is increasing by 1 million per year. Thus, it represents a significant bank of polymer science and technology which members can draw upon. Eventually most of the research is published, but member companies get an early look at the research results, and EPIC and the universities have an agreement that patent rights will be protected before publication is permitted.
