Biological research proteome

Certainly, the impact of the human genome initiative has sparked renewed interest in the application of protein structure determination, resulting in structural proteomics reaching all the way to basic biological research as well as drug discovery and development. 

Proteomics is a newly coined term that refers to the field of study of the proteome. The term was defined for the first time in 1994 as the PROTEin products of a genOME. Since its introduction, the term has found widespread acceptance across the breadth of biological research. A simple search of the Medline database circa October 2000 indicated an almost exponential increase in the number of published articles about proteomics (see Eigure 9.1) since 1995.
