Key documents that are developed during the planning stages can be used to focus and direct the compliance strategy, to outline the health and safety program/plan requirements, and to establish work controls. These documents are usually developed after contract award and before mobilization. 

Like VDA 6.1, AVSQ 94 does not include the requirements of ISO 9001. In this way issues of copyright are overcome, a practice shared by VDA and EAQF but not QS-9000. However, unlike VDA 6.1, AVSQ 94 follows the 20 elements of ISO 9001 with two additional elements, covering financial considerations and product safety. Those questions that go beyond ISO 9001 are marked and as every question is numbered it simplifies the evaluation process. A scoring method is employed to classify organizations in terms of a conformity index. Each question is awarded a point (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, or 10), where 10 points means full compliance, 7.5 points means minor inadequacies, 5 points means inadequacies in application requiring improvement, 2.5 points means serious inadequacies in application, and 0 points is used for criteria not applied. Unfortunately all questions carry the same weight as no account of the impact of omission on product quality or customer satisfaction is included. 

Problems can also arise when the results of safety audits are used in a competitive manner, for example, to compare two plants. Such use is obviously closely linked to the operation of incentive schemes. However, as was pointed out earlier, there is no evidence that giving an award to the "best plant" produces any lasting improvement in safety. The problem here is that the competitive aspect may be a diversion from the aim of safety audits, which... 

In order to promote safety, companies have contests, conduct periodic safety meetings, give prizes, award plaques, and conduct big advertising campaigns. Managers feel that making the employee aware of safety will help improve the company s over-all performance. Experience has shown them to be correct. 

The Blue Angel is a German eco-label for products and services [7]. The eco-label was introduced in 1978 and was one of the first worldwide environmental labels. The Blue Angel is an official label since it is owned by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety in Germany. The award criteria are established by the Federal Environmental Agency in Germany with the support of scientific institutes and the industry.

He is the author of the book "Application of HAZOP and What-If Safety Reviews to the Petroleum, Petrochemical and Chemical Industries," which is widely referred to within the petroleum and chemical industries. Mr. Nolan has also been listed in "Who s Who in California" for the last ten years and has been elected to appear in the 1996 International Edition of "Who s Who of Science and Engineering."... 

The final two marks awarded in this category are for your risk assessment. You have to show that you have taken the appropriate safety measures and that you are aware of the hazards associated with the chemicals and experimental procedures used and you must describe what you have done to minimise these risks. 

Recommendation 8. Future contracts should consider all aspects of performance, including (but not limited to) safety, cost, and schedule, in setting criteria for the award fee. 

Inspection grade 1 All surface safety systems should be awarded inspection grade 1 until a system history can be built up by a series of inspections or, at least until the first major inspection has been effected. 

Due to increasing demand for atrazine, in 1969 Geigy began production at a new plant in St. Gabriel, Louisiana. As part of the planning for the new facility, intensive research and development work was performed in Alabama and Basel to improve the production process. Instead of the batch process used previously, a new continuous production process was developed. The new and efficient Louisiana facility has been the recipient of numerous production, safety and environmental awards and recognitions, and is now the production site for all Syngenta atrazine, simazine, and terbuthylazine used worldwide.

In 1995 he was invited to teach as a Fulbright Scholar. He was a book reviewer for American Scientist, received the Control Hall of Fame Award in 2001 and the Life Time Achievement Award of ISA in 2005. Today, he is the president of the consulting firm Liptak Associates P.C. His work includes the design and optimization of industrial processes, energy conservation, pollution prevention, and safety-related projects. 

He has received a number of safety awards, and is a member of a number of professional organizations. 

BASIL [Biphasic Acid Scavenging utilizing Ionic Liquids] A range of catalytic processes for synthetic organic chemistry. These processes use ionic liquids as solvents, from which it is easy to recover the catalysts. Developed by BASF from 2002 and first commercialized in 2004 for the synthesis of alkoxyphenyl phosphines. Awarded the Entec Medal for safety and environmental innovation in 2005.
