Promoting safety awards

Fleet safety directors can use a variety of sources to promote safety awards.The media should be contacted well in advance of the awards ceremony, and you should prepare a news release. The news release should explain the contents of the awards presentation and any other interesting facts and figures. 

Radio airtime is another way to promote safety awards. The fleet safety director should work with radio personnel to develop a message that tells the public what the event is and where it will be held. 

In order to promote safety, companies have contests, conduct periodic safety meetings, give prizes, award plaques, and conduct big advertising campaigns. Managers feel that making the employee aware of safety will help improve the company s over-all performance. Experience has shown them to be correct. 

X Safety rewards — Over 75 percent of all respondent carriers have safety award programs for individual drivers. Safe drivers get promoted over imsafe drivers in over 89 percent of companies.

The easiest option for creating a simple safety award program is to identify the criteria and a potential award or recognition event or perhaps a menu of awards and recognition events appropriate to the criteria. The idea is to strive for planned, yet spontaneous recognition. It is planned in that you know what pinpointed behavior or accomplishment you plan to reward, but it is spontaneous in that you do not know when the criteria will be met. These award programs resemble traditional safety awards except that employees earn the awards based on specific actions that promote safety, not by going a fixed period of time without an incident.

Safety service awards are those awards distributed to workers for years of safe service. Milestones such as 1 year, 5,10, 20, and so on of performance without accident are common in the manufacturing industry. These awards are given out along with years-of-service awards however, the awards for years of service are meant to promote and reward workers for their company loyalty, which is not necessarily connected with safe work activity. I do not believe that lucrative safety service awards are commonplace in industry in the United States. Therefore, I will not be advising that safety service award programs be modified or canceled however, I believe that these types of awards could be postponed during belt tightening.
