Authoritative Sources of Information

Chemicals of concern are typically included in lists maintained by authoritative bodies internationally. An excellent open access source of the lists is contained in the PLuM (Public Library of Materials) database maintained by the Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry (http //bcgc. berkeley.edu). The lists included in PLuM along with the number of compounds represented on each list (last updated October 2011) are as follows  

Several databases are available for detailed toxicological information on chemicals. Judson [36] and Voutchkova et al. [37] have compiled database lists along with web addresses for several of the most useful resources. The most comprehensive 

Hazardons Snbstances Data Base over 4700 chemicals with peer-reviewed toxicology data. 

Chemical Carcinogenicity Research Information System carcinogenicity and mntagenicity data on over 8000 componnds. 

References to developmental and reprodnctive toxicology literature. GENETOX. Peer-reviewed genetic toxicology test data on over 3000 compounds. IRIS. Integrated Risk Information Systems provides hazard identification and dose-response for over 500 chemicals.

A final note of cantion the toxicity information provided on indi-vidnal chemicals is hy no means complete. Data have been selected to illnstrate certain principles no attempt is made to provide anything close to a thorongh toxicological evaluation of any of the chemicals discussed. The Sources and recommended reading section, appearing after the final chapter, lists several authoritative sources of toxicity information on individual chemicals. 

In healthcare, we are today at a crossroads of yet, another of many notable technical developments. Personal computers have become ubiquitous and easier to use for healthcare professionals and patients. The newly available mobile or handheld devices have become more practical for real-time computing. Through the Internet or hand-eld device, there is ready access to a patient s medical information. With these tools, the art of practicing medicine is truly about to change. An electronic information resource for the Internet and for handheld devices, as for other platforms, requires that the data meet specific standards of reliability. First DataBank information is tried and true, a tested, authoritative source of such information.

The continuous development of carotenoid research is reflected in various monographs and reviews published over the years and three generations of books under the title Carotenoids have been published by Birkhauser. The first one, by Karrer and Jucker, published in 1948 [1] and the second, edited by Isler and published in 1971 [2], became classics which are still widely used as valuable sources of information. H. Mayer and O. Isler. That comprehensive and authoritative review described systematically the construction of many synthons and the synthesis of many natural and unnatural carotenoids and related compounds. Twenty five years on, that chapter remains an essential reference work and source of information, with its extensive collection of tabulated data and lists of references to the original literature. Surveys of progress since 1971 have been presented at the lUPAC International Symposia on Carotenoids and are included in the published proceedings of these symposia. 

One of the greatest challenges feeing communication in the age of the Internet is the educated assessment and consumption of the vast array of information available to receivers at all levels. The need for courses and instruction in critical thinking, always important, has risen exponentially as various electronic sources of information have proliferated—especially when those sources are not well understood, their authoritativeness is open to question, and their existence is ephemeral.
