Biotin is widely distributed in foods. Beef liver, yeast, peanuts, kidney, chocolate, and egg yolk are especially rich sources. The intestinal flora synthesizes biotin. Fecal excretion reflects this enteric synthesis. Total daily urinary and fecal excretion exceeds the dietary intake.

The Wieland-Miescher ketone (1) can be commercially obtained or prepared [1,2] in the laboratory. Its methyl analog (2) is probably not commercially available but can be prepared in the laboratory by the published procedure [3,4]. The aim of the present review is to describe briefly the synthesis of several bioactive terpenes from these ketones (1) and (2). It describes only the synthesis (total and formal) of bioactive di-and sesquiterpenes. It is necessary to mention that the review does not claim to include the synthesis of all bioactive terpenes from the above mentioned ketones.

Synthesis of pinojaden A convergent synthetic route leads to the pyrazolidine-dione NO A 407854, which is esterihed in the last step with pivaloyl chloride. Pinoxaden is prepared effectively in a total of 5 (longest linear sequence) + 3 (oxadiazepane synthesis), total 8 steps. Key reachons are an efficient malononitrile arylation via cross-coupling [12] to access a sterically hindered aryl malononitrile and the unprecedented condensation of its malonamide derivative with [l,4,5]oxa-diazepane [8], This sequence fits feasibility criteria for a technical application.
