Other Platforms

Though product platforms have been discussed the most in the literature and used by companies, one should note that a complete platform must also include processes, customers segments, brands, and operations. Some of these platforms are described below. [Pg.68]

The owner of an industry platform provides the core components and defines the system architecture. Companies, called complementers, often add components that are consistent with the system architecture and add value to the entire system. They build on top of the industry-platform, using services and functionalities of the platform. The industry platform serves as a point of coordination for all industry-participants it motivates innovation because a large number of companies can either build-on or add to the system.
