Applied research centers

BioEnviroTech, Inc., is a supplier of bacterial products based upon natural saprophytic (those that digest only dead organic matter) and facultative (those that can modify their metabolism to live in the presence of free oxygen and with exposure to sunlight) bacteria for bioremediation. The technology is commercially available and has been tested by the National Environmental Technology Applications Center (NETAC) of the University of Pittsburgh Applied Research Center.

Catalytic Cracking Test. A standard microactivity test (MAT) was used to evaluate the conversion and selectivity of catalyst samples. The tests were done at the University of Pittsburgh s Applied Research Center (former Gulf Research Laboratory), a qualified laboratory for MAT evaluations. A standard method, developed by Gulf, was used without modification. A Cincinnati gas oil was cracked under the following conditions cat/oil=3, 16 h 1 WHSV, and 516°C. Prior to charging the reactor, all samples underwent a standard thermal pretreatment. Solids were first heat shocked for 1 h at 593°C. Next, selected materials were impregnated with 3000 ppm Ni and 6000 ppm V, as naphthenates. Then all samples were calcined for 10 h at 538°C. Finally, each material was steamed at 732°C for 14 h in a fluidized bed to produce a catalyst in a simulated equilibrium state. 

This body of data represents a large share of the know-how of the firms that market steam crackers. These companies are usually engineering firms that own their own technology (Stone and Webster, Lummus, Kellogg, Mitsubishi etc), furnace specialists (Selas, Foster Wheeler), KTI (Kinetics Technology International etc), or applied research centers (Jnsfitur Francois du Petrole IFF etc).

However, because of the multitude of existing data of interest to material thermal science and technology, and the variety of modes of presentation, computer-assisted extraction of numerical values of structural data, physicochemical properties and kinetic characteristics from primary sources are almost as difficult as before. As a consequence, the collection of these data, the assessment of their quality in specialized data centei, the publication of handbooks and other printed or electronic secondary sources (compilations of selected data) or tertiary sources (collections of carefully evaluated and recommended data), storage in data banks, and dissemination of these data to end users (educational institutions and basic scientific and applied research centers), still remain tedious and expensive.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) provides support to all the basic sciences and engineering in universities. NSF support of chemistry is very important, both the support directed to fundamental research initiated by individual investigators and the research done in research centers such as those aimed at developing new materials or at understanding and improving the environment. The support is critical, but more is needed for the chemistry division of NSF to achieve its objectives.10 Considering the importance of basic and applied chemistry and chemical engineering to the economic future of the United States, it seems that an increase in the ability of NSF to support fundamental and applied chemical science is warranted.

Multiplexed diode laser sensors have also been applied for measurements of gas temperature, velocity, and H2O partial pressures in hypervelocity air flows at the Calspan University of Buffalo Research Center s (CUBRC) Large Energy National Shock Tunnel (LENS Tunnel) in Buffalo, New York [12]. The sensors were developed to provide quantitative characterization of the facility operation and, in particular, the freestream flow properties as a function of time. The measurements were recorded using a hardened probe, which contained critical optical components and photodetectors, that was installed directly into the hypersonic shock-tunnel near the nozzle exit to minimize complications due to boundary layers and facility vibration.
