Each volume will be thematic, dealing with a specific and related subject that will cover fundamental, basic aspects including synthesis, isolation, purification, physical and chemical properties, stability and reactivity, reactions involving mechanisms, intra- and intermolecular transformations, intra- and intermolecular rearrangements, applications as medicinal agents, biological and biomedical studies, pharmacological aspects, applications in material science, and industrial and structural applications. [Pg.9]

Inertial sensors are useful devices in both science and industry. Higher precision sensors could find practical scientific applications in the areas of general relativity (Chow et ah, 1985), geodesy and geology. Important applications of such devices occur also in the field of navigation, surveying and analysis of earth structures. Matter-wave interferometry has recently shown its potential to be an extremely sensitive probe for inertial forces (Clauser, 1988). First, neutron interferometers have been used to measure the Earth rotation (Colella et ah, 1975) and the acceleration due to gravity (Werner et ah, 1979) in the end of the seventies. In 1991, atom interference techniques have been used in... [Pg.359]

The study of the mechanical properties of filled elastomer systems is a chaUenging and exciting topic for both fundamental science and industrial application. It is known that the addition of hard particulates to a soft elastomer matrix results in properties that do not follow a straightforward mle of mixtures. Research efforts in this area have shown that the properties of filled elastomers are influenced by the nature of both the filler and the matrix, as well as the interactions between them. Several articles have reviewed the influence of fiUers hke sihca and carbon black on the reinforcement of elastomers. In general, the strucmre-property relationships developed for filled elastomers have evolved into the foUowing major areas FiUer structure, hydrodynamic reinforcement, and interactions between fiUers and elastomers. [Pg.503]

Preliminary work on several of these projects has already been in progress for over a year. These initial efforts will be expanded and intensified when the committee on pesticides becomes activated in the near future. However, pursuance of this program will require the support and cooperation of all segments of science and industry. Advisory bodies from the various interested groups will be called upon for recommendations and suggestions on problems which fall within their field. In turn, the assistance of this committee will be available, not only to the medical profession, but to all other groups in any direction in which the committee may be useful. [Pg.64]

One often finds that when high resolution separation schemes are utilized, other techniques and disciplines must participate in the scheme of understanding and effectively utilizing the separation with subsequent identification of the resulting zones. A rigorous and often multidimensional detection scheme such as mass spectrometry and/or fluorescence is found both for the life science and industrial polymer applications. Other disciplines including informatics and statistics are often... [Pg.489]

In the preceding ten chapters of this book, we have described various important chemical and physical changes brought about by the absorption of ionizing radiation in gaseous and condensed media. Wherever possible, we have tried to elucidate the underlying mechanism with a discussion of the properties and reactivities of the intermediate species. However, the book would remain incomplete without discussion of some of the various uses that have been found for radiation-induced reactions in science and industry. [Pg.361]

And now, I ll be talking about the interaction between basic science and applied science, or, you might say, university science and industrial science. [Pg.8]
