Applications in coatings industry

Surfactants are added to a thermoset resin system to promote the dispersion of fillers in the resin matrix. Recently, surfactants have been used to disperse carbon nanotubes in polymer matrices [48-50]. Surfactants are of two types neutral and ionic. Surfactants have many applications in coating industries for the development of a water-based resin system [51]. Surfactants are added to phenolic or polyurethane foam formulation in which they facilitate formation of small bubbles. The size and uniformity of bubble formation results in a fine cell structure. A surfactant reduces the surface tension of resin formulations and provides an interface between the highly polar resin and the non-polar blowing agent. The surfactant for a particular resin system must be selected carefully so that it is compatible with the resin and resistant... [Pg.18]

Organosols find their major application in coatings, which may be applied by spray, dip, knife, roller, etc. Typical products are coated aluminum siding, fabrics, paper, industrial coatings, etc. [Pg.1357]

The most widely used method of application in heavy industrial projects is airless spraying. This utilises high pressure, the liquid paint being ejected through a fine specially designed nozzle which causes the paint stream to break up into fine droplets in the form of a fan. This rapid method of paint deposition also allows application of high dry-film thickness with each coat, 150 /an being not unusual in this respect. A coat of "decorative paint applied by brush would probably yield a thickness of 30-40 fim. [Pg.271]

Cd and its compounds find applications in several industrial materials electrode materials in Ni-Cd batteries (about 70% of total produced Cd), pigments in ceramics, glasses, paper, plastics, artists colors (13%), stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride and related polymers (7%), coatings on steel, aluminium, and other nonferrous metals (8%), and specialized alloys (see Alloys) and others (2%). [Pg.526]

Poly(acrylates) and poly(methacrylates) form another class of common polymers with saturated carbon chain backbone. Polyacrylates can be considered vinyl polymers with the -COOR group attached at every other carbon atom in the chain. However, due to their common use and particular properties, polyacrylates form a separate polymer class together with polymethacrylates. Among the most common polymers from this class are those obtained from acrylic acid methyl ester (PMA) and methylacrylic (methacrylic) acid methyl ester (PMMA). Acrylic polymers have many practical applications in automotive industry, in the production of medical materials, paints, coatings and lacquers, adhesives, textiles, and synthetic leather. Poly(methacrylic acid methyl ester) can be obtained in cast sheets with applications in technical components, furniture, building materials, etc. Formulas for poly(acrylic acid), two polyacrylates, and poly(methyl methacrylate) are shown below ... [Pg.341]

Polyethylene and its copolymers find applications in major industries such as packaging, housewares, appliances, transportation, communications, electric power, agriculture, and construction. The majority of LDPE is used as thin film for packaging. Other uses include wire and cable insulation, coatings, and injection-molded products (Table 15.2). [Pg.424]

Hybrid latex particles find their applications in coatings, adhesives, plastics, and specialty applications like medical diagnostics. In the last 10 years, an increased interest in hybrid latex particles in both scientific communities and industry can be observed. Especially the incorporation of clay platelets and nanosilica particles in latexes can be regarded as main areas of interest in the field of polymer colloids at the moment. Scientific meetings over the past 3 years have featured many contributions in this direction from all over the world. [Pg.297]

In the area of material science, polyurethane has captured a unique niche of its own, instigating research in industry and across the academic field in recent times. Following its inception in the mid-1930s, its popularity has reached a pinnacle with a huge variety of applications in coatings, leathers, elastomers, sealants, composites, biomedicals and so on. Another successful example is a commercialized product of dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid-doped polyaniline (PANI-DBSA) in xylene solution/dispersion in combination with matrix such as polyurethane, polyester, and so on. Thanks to the counterion-induced processability of polyaniline, pale green color antistatic coating with surface resistivity of 10 -10 Q/D can be produced (Figure 10.9), which has shown great success in antistatic application in electronic industry, mainly due to its good transparency, low cost, and long-term stability. [Pg.285]

Kaolin elay acts as ingredients for forming ultramarine blue pigments, which has dark blue eolom. Best quality ultramarine blue is used in all types of laundry while teehnieal and industrial grades for applications in coating, cosmetic, ink and plastic pigments. [Pg.194]

After the application of alkyd coating, the physical film is formed together with crosslinking (known in coating industry as curing) by means of oxidative drying, identical to the crosslinking of solvent-based alkyds [78]. [Pg.70]

It includes the many of the key historical developments and discusses up to date information on manufacturers, product forms and applications. [Pg.143]

Africa, where the sample in which the relevant strain had been discovered was taken. Pimaricin has been used as a vaginal suppository for the therapy of Candida infections and for other medical purposes like ophthalmic suspensions (Raab, 1972). Since the early 1960 s efforts have also been made to introduce it as a food preservative. Also in this case it has achieved a certain importance especially in the surface preservation of cheeses. Due to the currently increasing world-wide concern about the resistance of pathogenic bacteria against antibiotics it is discussed whether antibiotics used in food should be banned or its usage should be more restricted in the future. The addition of preparations containing pimaricin to cheese coatings based on polymer emulsions is still an important application in this industrial sector. [Pg.297]

The process of particle-surface adhesion has many applications in both industrial and biological processes [3], In industrial processes, partide-surface adhesion is important in detergency, water purification, flotation, fibre manufacture, paper coatings, etc. In the biology, particle-surface adhesion is important in cell contacts, cell adhesion and attachment, phagocytosis, marine fouling, etc. [Pg.337]
