Pigments extender

Preformed Two-Piece Metal Containers. Ink vehicles for letterset printing of two-piece aluminum or steel containers are mainly based on special polyester vehicles used in conjunction with melamine cross-linkers. Short cycle ovens which dry inks in 1—5 seconds are now used and operate at temperatures as high as 350 °C. The rheology of these inks must be adjusted to the unique geometry of the press. Desired rheological properties are achieved by the use of additives as weU as extender pigments. 

Pigments and Extenders. Pigments are selected for use in house paints based on thek appearance and performance quaUties. Appearance includes color and opacifying abiUty. Performance quaUties include ultraviolet light resistance, fade resistance, exterior weatherabiUty, chemical resistance, as well as particle size and shape. Toxicity profiles and safety and health related properties are also important criteria in pigment selection. 

With few exceptions, extender pigments can be classified as commodity chemicals. They are manufactured in large quantities with less sophisticated production methods than most pigments. Whereas the majority of pigments is prepared synthetically, extender pigments are mainly manufactured by the beneficiation of natural minerals. Based on chemical composition, extender pigments are carbonate, sulfate, siUca-based, and siUcate-based compounds.

Other extender pigments include barium sulfate, feldspar, diatomite, and mica. 

Extender pigments are low-cost, generally colorless or white pigments with a refractive index less than 1.7. Sometimes diese pigments are also referred to as fillers. Many extenders are derived from natural sources and display many diverse properties. They are added to various formulations to improve technical and application properties and to reduce costs, Like pigments, extenders are dispersed in media in which they do not dissolve, but compared to pigments they do not have any significant coloristic properties. 

Extender pigments give relatively httle hiding, but their cost is lower than that of prime pigments they provide control of such properties as flow consistency, durability, and adhesion.
