C2.8.5 BRIEF OVERVIEW OF OTHER SPECIFIC CASES OF CORROSION... [Pg.2731]

A linear dependence approximately describes the results in a range of extraction times between 1 ps and 50 ps, and this extrapolates to a value of Ws not far from that observed for the 100 ps extractions. However, for the simulations with extraction times, tg > 50 ps, the work decreases more rapidly with l/tg, which indicates that the 100 ps extractions still have a significant frictional contribution. As additional evidence for this, we cite the statistical error in the set of extractions from different starting points (Fig. 2). As was shown by one of us in the context of free energy calculations[12], and more recently again by others specifically for the extraction process [1], the statistical error in the work and the frictional component of the work, Wp are related. For a simple system obeying the Fokker-Planck equation, both friction and mean square deviation are proportional to the rate, and... [Pg.144]

Table 1 is condensed from Handbook 44. It Hsts the number of divisions allowed for each class, eg, a Class III scale must have between 100 and 1,200 divisions. Also, for each class it Hsts the acceptance tolerances appHcable to test load ranges expressed in divisions (d) for example, for test loads from 0 to 5,000 d, a Class II scale has an acceptance tolerance of 0.5 d. The least ambiguous way to specify the accuracy for an industrial or retail scale is to specify an accuracy class and the number of divisions, eg. Class III, 5,000 divisions. It must be noted that this is not the same as 1 part in 5,000, which is another method commonly used to specify accuracy eg, a Class III 5,000 d scale is allowed a tolerance which varies from 0.5 d at zero to 2.5 d at 5,000 divisions. CaHbration curves are typically plotted as in Figure 12, which shows a typical 5,000-division Class III scale. The error tunnel (stepped lines, top and bottom) is defined by the acceptance tolerances Hsted in Table 1. The three caHbration curves belong to the same scale tested at three different temperatures. Performance must remain within the error tunnel under the combined effect of nonlinearity, hysteresis, and temperature effect on span. Other specifications, including those for temperature effect on zero, nonrepeatabiHty, shift error, and creep may be found in Handbook 44 (5). The acceptance tolerances in Table 1 apply to new or reconditioned equipment tested within 30 days of being put into service. After that, maintenance tolerances apply they ate twice the values Hsted in Table 1. Table 1 is condensed from Handbook 44. A particular mode of neurotoxicity was discovered for tricresyl phosphate that correlated with the presence of the o-cresyl isomer (or certain other specific aLkylphenyl isomers) in the triaryl phosphates. Many details of the chemistry and biochemistry of the toxic process have been elucidated (139,140,143—146). The use of low ortho-content cresols has become the accepted practice in industrial production of tricresyl phosphate. Standard in vivo tests, usually conducted with chickens sensitive to this mode of toxicity, have been developed for premarket testing of new or modified triaryl phosphates. As of 1992, the EPA called for extensive new toxicity and environmental data on this group of products (147). The Vederal e ster AoQ xm. ci. calling for this... [Pg.480]

Applications. For use as a gaseous dielectric, other specific properties are needed in addition to high breakdown strength, and a compromise must be made between electrical and mechanical requirements. Desirable properties include low toxicity, thermal stabiUty toward materials of constmction. [Pg.242]

Testing and Standards. Requirements for extmsion and mol ding grades are cited in ASTM specifications (79) and in Federal specification LP-389A of May 1964 (80). For fabricated shapes, FEP film and sheet are covered by Aeronautical Material Specifications (AMS) 3647 and LP-523 (81). Besides the specifications covered by the Fluorocarbons Division of the Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (82), other specifications are Hsted in Reference 83. [Pg.362]

Other specific discovery assays have been used such as differential inhibition of a vancomycin resistant S. aureus strain and its susceptible parent, and an assay based on antagonism of the antibacterial activity by N,A/-diacetyl-L-Lys-D-Ala-D-Ala [24570-39-6] a tripeptide analogue of the dalbaheptides receptor. AppHcation of this latter test to 1936 cultures (90) led to the isolation of 42 dalbaheptides, six of which, including kibdelin (Table 3), parvodicin (Table 3), and actinoidin A2 (68) were novel. A colorimetric assay based on competition between horseradish peroxidase bound teicoplanin and the... [Pg.535]

The elemental and vitamin compositions of some representative yeasts are Hsted in Table 1. The principal carbon and energy sources for yeasts are carbohydrates (usually sugars), alcohols, and organic acids, as weU as a few other specific hydrocarbons. Nitrogen is usually suppHed as ammonia, urea, amino acids or oligopeptides. The main essential mineral elements are phosphoms (suppHed as phosphoric acid), and potassium, with smaller amounts of magnesium and trace amounts of copper, zinc, and iron. These requirements are characteristic of all yeasts. The vitamin requirements, however, differ among species. Eor laboratory and many industrial cultures, a commercial yeast extract contains all the required nutrients (see also Mineral nutrients). [Pg.387]

Calcium plays a vital role ia excitation—contraction coupling, and failure to maintain iatraceUular calcium homeostasis results ia ceU death. The avaUabUity of the calcium antagonists also provides a powerful tool for basic studies of excitation—contraction coupling, stimulus—excretion coupling, and other specific physiological functions. [Pg.125]

Cumulative organ toxicity also presents a significant obstacle for effective chemotherapy. In many cases, the severity of the toxicity impedes the broader use of an agent. Other specific toxicities are associated with specific agents, for example cardiotoxicity with adriamycin (32), renal toxicity with i7j -platinum (28), and neurotoxicity with vincristine (49). [Pg.444]

Diatomite is tested from the mining bench through the production process to the bag. Methods depend in part on use. For use in pigments, there are ASTM (12) and military (13) specifications. Other specifications relate to use in the pulp (qv) and paper (qv) industry (14), in water (qv) purification (15), and for use in pharmaceuticals (qv) (16). [Pg.58]

Dilute This is a fully expanded condition in which the solids particles are so widely separated that they exert essentially no influence upon each other. Specifically, the solids phase is so fuUy dispersed in the gas that the den sity of the suspension is essentially that of the gas phase alone (Fig. 12-29). Commonly, this situation exists when the gas velocity at all points in the system exceeds the terminal setthng velocity of the solids and the particles can be lifted and continuously conveyed by the gas however, this is not always true. Gravity settling chambers such as prilling towers and countercurrent-flow spray diy-ers are two exceptions in which gas velocity is insufficient to entrain the sohds completely. [Pg.1173]

Other specifications often used in place of one or more of the last four listed are the fractional recovery of one component in either D or B and/or the concentration of one component in either D or B. [Pg.1262]

Because Norske Shell was using these turboexpanders in a dewpoint control process, it was necessary to factor in other specific conditions. For instance, these mrboexpanders could be exposed to possibly violent process transient conditions. For this reason, the magnetic bearings required a flux control system to increase the response capability, which was developed by the original equipment manufacturer in concert with the magnetic bearing manufacturer. The load factor of... [Pg.457]

PVC is due more to differences in hydrogen bonding or some other specific interaction. It has been shown by Small that the interaction of plasticiser and PVC is greatest with the phosphate and lowest with the sebacate. [Pg.88]

With all six series of polyester illustrated in Figure 25.14, as the number of methylene groups in the repeating unit increases so the polymer becomes more like a linear polyethylene (polymethylene). Thus the melting points for five of the six classes are seen to converge towards that of the melting point of polymethylene. In the ca.se of the sixth class, the poly(alkylene adipates), there would appear no reason to believe that additional data on other specific members of the class would not lead to a similar conclusion. [Pg.714]

The range of these properties can be varied very widely depending on the application and these figures are given for illustration. Depending on specialized applications, other specific properties may be provided. [Pg.704]

Other specifications of the porous materials that affect the performance of HOPC include pore volume. A larger pore volume, or equivalently closer packing, of the porous materials increases the ratio of the volume of the stationary phase to the volume of the mobile phase. The difference causes a shift in the segregation boundary in the partitioning and a change in the resolution. [Pg.626]

There are many other specific techniques applicable to particular situations, and these should often be investigated to select the method for developing the vapor-liquid relationships most reliable for the system. These are often expressed in calculation terms as the effective K for the components, i, of a system. Frequently used methods are Chao-Seader, Peng-Robinson, Renon, Redlich-Kwong, Soave Redlich-Kwong, Wilson. [Pg.12]
