Ihere are only a few recent studies on the fabrication and characterization of stand-alone bio-polymer nanocomposite films or coatings displaying Hquid repellent properties. Obeso et al. [23] developed a superhydrophobic surface by precipitation of poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) on the surface of cellulose fibers of papers using a phase separation process. The same authors used a similar approach to synthesize biodegradable superhydrophobic poly (L-lactic acid) substrates in order to control cell adhesion. O Figure 47.16 shows the design of the aluminum ceiling panel intended for use on the latest intercity coaches (Seeds 1984). The requirement is to fasten the top-hat stiffeners to the upper side of the panel without damaging the epoxy-paint finish on the underside. Two-part separate application acrylic adhesive met the requirements of the joint and a light abrasion plus a solvent wipe gave adequate preparation.

In the main, these separate applications require very different characteristics from their respective adhesives. Structural adhesives literally stick extremely well and must cope with occasional, generally accidental, peel and cleavage forces. As will be seen, there are several types of adhesive suitable for such applications. 

Mention may also be made of an application in which careful control of polymer morphology has led to the production of novel materials. By treatment of solutions of high-density polyethylene, products are obtained with a celluloselike morphology and which are known as, fibrides or synthetic wood pulp. They are used for finishing paper and special boards to impart such features as sealability and improved wet strength.
