Particle bombardment

Initially, the only means of obtaining elements higher than uranium was by a-particle bombardment of uranium in the cyclotron, and it was by this means that the first, exceedingly minute amounts of neptunium and plutonium were obtained. The separation of these elements from other products and from uranium was difficult methods were devised involving co-precipitation of the minute amounts of their salts on a larger amount of a precipitate with a similar crystal structure (the carrier ). The properties were studied, using quantities of the order of 10 g in volumes of... [Pg.443]

The use of larger particles in the cyclotron, for example carbon, nitrogen or oxygen ions, enabled elements of several units of atomic number beyond uranium to be synthesised. Einsteinium and fermium were obtained by this method and separated by ion-exchange. and indeed first identified by the appearance of their concentration peaks on the elution graph at the places expected for atomic numbers 99 and 100. The concentrations available when this was done were measured not in gcm but in atoms cm. The same elements became available in greater quantity when the first hydrogen bomb was exploded, when they were found in the fission products. Element 101, mendelevium, was made by a-particle bombardment of einsteinium, and nobelium (102) by fusion of curium and the carbon-13 isotope. [Pg.443]

Processing variables that affect the properties of the thermal CVD material include the precursor vapors being used, substrate temperature, precursor vapor temperature gradient above substrate, gas flow pattern and velocity, gas composition and pressure, vapor saturation above substrate, diffusion rate through the boundary layer, substrate material, and impurities in the gases. Eor PECVD, plasma uniformity, plasma properties such as ion and electron temperature and densities, and concurrent energetic particle bombardment during deposition are also important. [Pg.525]

ThSiO "Th and Th are present in naturally occurring uranium Th and Th occur in uranium minerals as members of the decay chain. The remaining isotopes are formed upon neutron bombardment of those isotopes discussed, or by charged particle bombardment of various targets. [Pg.35]

Unlike traditional surface science techniques (e.g., XPS, AES, and SIMS), EXAFS experiments do not routinely require ultrahigh vacuum equipment or electron- and ion-beam sources. Ultrahigh vacuum treatments and particle bombardment may alter the properties of the material under investigation. This is particularly important for accurate valence state determinations of transition metal elements that are susceptible to electron- and ion-beam reactions. Nevertheless, it is always more convenient to conduct experiments in one s own laboratory than at a Synchrotron radiation focility, which is therefore a significant drawback to the EXAFS technique. These focilities seldom provide timely access to beam lines for experimentation of a proprietary nature, and the logistical problems can be overwhelming. [Pg.224]

Perikinetic motion of small particles (known as colloids ) in a liquid is easily observed under the optical microscope or in a shaft of sunlight through a dusty room - the particles moving in a somewhat jerky and chaotic manner known as the random walk caused by particle bombardment by the fluid molecules reflecting their thermal energy. Einstein propounded the essential physics of perikinetic or Brownian motion (Furth, 1956). Brownian motion is stochastic in the sense that any earlier movements do not affect each successive displacement. This is thus a type of Markov process and the trajectory is an archetypal fractal object of dimension 2 (Mandlebroot, 1982). [Pg.161]

The heart of the nuclear reactor boiler plant system is the reactor core, in which the nuclear fission process takes place. Nuclear fission is the splitting of a nucleus into two or more separate nuclei. Fission is usually by neutron particle bombardment and is accompanied by the release of a very large amount of energy, plus additional neutrons, other particles, and radioactive material. The generation of new neutrons during fission makes possible a chain reaction process and the subsequent... [Pg.61]

There are several methods in use for producing these clusters. Particle bombardment or laser vaporization of a graphite surface leads to direct formation of ions that can be detected by mass spectrometry. These are normally of relatively small size (n<30). By laser vaporization of graphite into a molecular beam neutral... [Pg.35]

Seed-specific production of LTB by Streatfield et al. [28] resulted in expression levels of up to 1.8% total soluble protein (TSP), and two separate maize breeding programs have increased antigen production by fivefold [28] and tenfold [27]. The investigations of Chikwamba et al. [27] regarding the expression of LTB in maize are among the first to include the use of particle bombardment transformation for the production of plant-derived vaccines. [Pg.142]
