The full-prepolymer, quasi-prepolymer, and one-shot techniques may appear to be quite similar, but they each have important bearing on equipment requirements and physical properties. The full-prepolymer method, for example, is die process of choice for making high-performance cast elastomers with superb dynamic properties, such as industrial bumpers and bushings. Quasi-prepolymers are used in less demanding applications like shoe soles, adhesives, and spray elastomers. One-shots make up the rest, including most foams and elastomers. [Pg.237]

Vinyl film, saturated paper, and fabric are bonded to plywood, chipboard, and steel to produce a variety of decorative panels, from simulated wood paneling to fabric-covered modular office sections. Generally, the adhesive is coated onto the rigid substrate via roll coater or spray application. Roll coater adhesive application to plywood and chipboard generally requires more than one pass for sufficient adhesive deposition, since the surfaces tend to absorb the adhesive. The primer or sealer coat is generally dried completely before a second coat is applied. Then, this second coat is subjected to a partial dry before nipping-some-times under heat—to the decorative surface film. The ideal resin distribution for a particleboard manufacturer is usually defined by the maximum board properties obtainable when using a given minimal amount of adhesive. The cost of a continuous film of adhesive becomes prohibitive as wood particle size decreases in a composite because of the enormous wood surface area involved.
