Stearyl ammonium

Quaternary ammonium compounds are usually named as the substituted ammonium salt. The anion is Hsted last (3). Substituent names can be either common (stearyl) or lUPAC (octadecyl). If the long chain in the compound is from a natural mixture, the chain is named after that mixture, eg, taHowalkyL Prefixes such as di- and tri- are used if an alkyl group is repeated. Complex compounds usually have the substituents Hsted in alphabetical order. Some common quaternary ammonium compounds and their appHcations in patent Hterature are Hsted in Table 1.

The rigidity and strength of networks prepared with cetostearyl alcohol and alkyltrimethyl-ammonium bromides (Cj2-Cjg) increase as the alkyl chain length increases. The rheological stability of ternary systems is markedly dependent on the alcohol chain length networks prepared with ionic or nonionic surfactants and pure cetyl or pure stearyl alcohol are weaker than those prepared with cetostearyl alcohol. In particular, emulsions prepared with stearyl alcohol are mobile and eventually separate. 

In commercial products quaternary ammonium surfactants are almost never used alone. They are often used in combination with long-chain fatty conditioners, especially cetyl and stearyl alcohols [25], which serve to boost the conditioning effects of the quats [39], The addition of cetyl alcohol to cetrimonium bromide was found to reduce combing forces by nearly 50% [25], In another study, Fukuchi et al. [40] found a significant decrease in surface friction with the combination of cetyl alcohol and behentrimonium chloride. 

For the synthetic fibre poly(ethylene terephthalate) it is very important to impart antistatic properties to it [175]. Studies on the effect of the structure of cationic surfactants on the half-life time of static charge decay and surface resistivity (Rs) of PET fibres show best results with a methylated quarternary ammonium salt of a stearyl amine-ethylene oxide adduct or hydrochloride of a lauryl amine-EO adduct with 10 EO. 

Even monofunctional cationics are substantive to hair (i.e., they resist removal by water rinsing). For example, stearyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride are major active ingredients in creme rinse products because they are substantive to water rinsing of hair, and they condition the hair fiber surface.
