The influence of the addition of cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, CTAC, to the reverse micellar solution affects the droplet size and micellar interactions, as demonstrated by the DQLS experiment (64). Addition of CTAC to micellar system at a given water content leaves the droplet size unchanged, whereas a decrease in the intermicellar attraction has been observed. This decrease is more important for high CTAC concentrations. This has been interpreted to steric repulsion induced by the long hydrocarbon tail of CTAC (C ft). Thus, the addition of this compound to CdS synthesis could modify the nucleation and/or growth process. The experiments were performed by solulization of CTAC in the micellar solution containing either sodium sulfide or Cd(AOT)2. [Pg.226]

As a consequence of their tendency to form lamellar phases or rod shaped micelles at low concentration, cationic surfactants are frequently employed as the primary surfactants to thicken high salt formulas [72,73]. The viscoelastic nature of certain cationic surfactant solutions has been employed in a novel way to allow for a solution of sodium hypochlorite not to be easily diluted and therefore to remain at a higher concentration for the purpose of oxidizing clogs of human hair which form in drains [73 ]. Low concentrations of cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride in combination with two hydro tropes form viscoelastic solutions with the values of viscosity and Tau/Go shown in Table 6.6. [Pg.163]

CMCs of these polyfluorinated surfactants are of the order of 10 5 m.47 Plots of the observed H chemical shifts versus surfactant concentration of cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, cetyl pyridinium chloride, cetyl dimethyl phenyl ammonium chloride, cetyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, cetyl dimethy 1-2-phenyl ethyl ammonium chloride, and cetyl dimethyl-3-phenyl propyl ammonium chloride, are sigmoidal and were fitted to a model based on the mass action. The H chemical shift-based CMC values are in excellent agreement with those determined by the surface tension method.48 The micellization processes of dodecyl trimethyl ammonium halides (chloride and bromide) studied by calorimetric titration show different behaviors at 298 K. However, these disappear at 313 K, while the results measured by the chemical shift versus surfactant concentration do not show this difference.49 The CMC of 3-aminopropyl triethoxy silane in toluene is ca. 0.47m, measured by H and l3C chemical shifts.50 The CMC of optically active potassium A -n-dodecanoyl alaminate measured by H and l3C chemical shifts is lower (11-15 him) in D20 than that in a mixed solvent of 1,4-dioxane and D20 (19mM).-51 The H chemical shift shows that the CMC of resorcinol-type calix[4] phosphoric esters having four alkyl side-chains, [4]Ar 5P-R-n, is insensitive to the length of the side-chains, n.52 The CMC values of a family of surfactants, the sodium cyclohexyl alkanoates, with different lengths of the alkanoate side-chains, were obtained from 13C chemical-shift measurements. The results show that these amphiphiles have high CMCs (0.12-1.02 m).-53... [Pg.150]

Even monofunctional cationics are substantive to hair (i.e., they resist removal by water rinsing). For example, stearyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride are major active ingredients in creme rinse products because they are substantive to water rinsing of hair, and they condition the hair fiber surface. [Pg.351]

In this chapter, we introduce the ESA modified membranes by forming electrostatic alternate layers of cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) onto charged copolyacrylonitrile membranes (Scheme 1). Along with surface characterization of the ESA multilayer, infrared analysis was carried out. Finally, we evaluated the adsorptive properties of ESA multilayer for Fe and Fe, and ESA membranes with chitosan microspheres / PAA for removing of Cu2+. [Pg.302]

Single-chain quaternary anunonium surfactants are prepared from the reaction of fatty alcohols or fatty acids with a secondary amine. The resulting tertiary amine then reacts with methyl chloride to provide quaternary anunonium chlorides. The most important is cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC), which has excellent substantivity and conditioning properties. [Pg.483]

Cationic surfactants commonly comprise an alkyl hydrophobic tail and a methyl-ammonium ionic compound head, such as cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), CjgH33N(CH3)jBr, and cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC), CjgH33N(CH3)3Cl. [Pg.132]

Another example is shown in fig. 16.8, where cesium (Cs) ions are used as coions for cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC) adsorbed on a mica surface [20]. Here we note that the CPP decreases with increasing Cs ion concentration. The interpretation is that the Cs cation competes with the ammonium for the surface... [Pg.335]

Ionic surfactants such as sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (NaDBS) or cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTACl) adsorb on hydrophobic particles of agrochemicals, as a result of the hydrophobic interaction between the alkyl group of the surfactant and the particle surface. As a result, the particle surface will acquire a charge that is compensated by counterions (Na in the case of NeiDBS and Cl in the case of CTACl) forming an electrical double layer. [Pg.237]
