Cetrimonium bromide

Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (cetrimonium bromide, CTAB) [57-09-0] M 364.5, m 227-235"(dec). Crystd from EtOH, EtOH/ benzene or from wet acetone after extracting twice with pet ether. Shaken with anhydrous diethyl ether, filtered and dissolved in a little hot MeOH. After cooling in the refrigerator, the ppte was filtered at room temperature and redissolved in MeOH. Anhydrous ether was added and, after warming to obtain a clear soln, it was cooled and crystalline material was filtered. [Dearden and Wooley J Phys Chem 91 2404 7957 Hakemi et al. Cetrimonium bromide and cetrimide are quaternary ammonium antiseptics, trimethylammonium derivatives, with similar structures. Cetrimonium bromide is hexadecyltrimethylammonium. Cetrimide is a mixture of tetradecyltrimethylammonium (mostly), dodecyltri-methylammonium, and hexadecyltrimethylammonium. They dissociate in aqueous solution, forming a relatively large and complex cation, which is responsible for their... [Pg.704]

Phenyllithium, and 50% sodium hydroxide with a catalytic amount of TEBA chloride, or cetrimonium bromide have been used in a few instances, instead of sodium hydride, to generate the anion in alkylation reactions. A study comparing the use of lithium diisopropylamide in tetrahydrofuran/hexamethylphosphoramide, potassium hydroxide with benzene and dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6, and 50% sodium hydroxide with benzene or acetonitrile and cetrimonium bromide for alkylation concludes that the phase transfer procedure is advantageous. Triton B has sometimes been used as an alternative to aqueous hydroxide for the hydrolysis of 27 to 28, " particularly in cases where R = 2-nitrobenzyl. - - ... [Pg.194]

In commercial products quaternary ammonium surfactants are almost never used alone. They are often used in combination with long-chain fatty conditioners, especially cetyl and stearyl alcohols [25], which serve to boost the conditioning effects of the quats [39], The addition of cetyl alcohol to cetrimonium bromide was found to reduce combing forces by nearly 50% [25], In another study, Fukuchi et al. [40] found a significant decrease in surface friction with the combination of cetyl alcohol and behentrimonium chloride. [Pg.385]
