Alkanes alkyl sulfonates

A class of enzymes capable of removing sulfur from alkane sulfonates exists, which may have relevance in microbial desulfurization of alkyl sulfides. A gene cluster ssuEADCB was identified in E. coli. The enzyme SsuD was capable of conversion of pentane sulfonic acid to pentaldehyde and sulfite. It was reported to be capable of conversion of alkyl sulfonates from C2 to CIO, as well as substituted ethanesulfonates and sulfonated buffers. The SsuE was a flavin-reducing enzyme that provided FMNH2 to the SsuD. 

The application of collision-induced dissociation (CID(—)) to re-alkane- or linear (primary) alkyl sulfonates (PASs CraH2n+1-S03) or their isomers, the SASs with the modified formula CH3—(CH2)n— CIKSO3)—(CH2)X—CH3, and alkene sulfonates using FIA—MS—MS(—) conditions leads to only one, not quite specific, fragment ion at m/z 80,... 

Esters of allylic alcohols with resin-bound carboxylic acids can be converted into allyl palladium complexes, which react with carbon nucleophiles and with hydride sources to yield the formally reduced allyl derivatives (Entries 3 and 4, Table 3.47). Alkyl sulfonates have been reduced to alkanes with NaBH4 (Entry 5, Table 3.47). Aryl sulfonates (Entry 6, Table 3.47) and aryl perfluoroalkylsulfonates [814] can be reduced to alkanes by treatment with catalytic amounts of Pd(II) and formic acid as a hydride source.

Apart from alkene production, n-alkanes are applied as feedstock in the technical production of alkyl sulfonate surfactants (see Section 5.3.5 for details about surfactants and their application). Two routes are established for the production of the alkyl sulfonate sodium salts [R-S03]Na from higher alkanes (for this application typical C-numbers are 12-18). In both routes, alkane activation proceeds via alkyl radicals, which are generated by UV-irradiation at room temperature.
