Polymers trade names

Cationic Hydroxyethylcelluloses. These materials are manufactured by Union Carbide Corp. and National Starch and Chemical Corp., marketed under the trade names Polymer JR and Celquat, respectively (47,48). The cationic substituent on Polymer JR is presumably 2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (72). Celquat is presumably the reaction product of HEC with /V,/V-dia11y1-/V,/V-dimethy1ammonium chloride (73). Their primary appHcation is in shampoos and hair conditioners wherein the cationic moiety imparts substantivity to hair. Some typical properties of Celquat resins are given in Table 7. [Pg.276]

Most of the polymers are better known by their trivial names or trade names. Polymers prepared from single polymers are denoted by prefixing poly- to the name of the monomer, e.g., polyethylene, polypropylene, Polyacrylonitrile, polystyrene, etc. If the monomer has substituents or has a multi-worded name, the name of the monomer is enclosed in parenthesis after the prefix poly-, e.g., poly (methyl methacrylate), poly (vinyl alcohol), etc. Condensation polymers like that derived from ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid are named as poly (ethylene terephthalate). [Pg.59]

In far too many instances trade-name polymer nomenclature conveys very little meaning regarding the structure of a polymer. Many condensation polymers, in fact, seem not to have names. Thus the polymer obtained by the step polymerization of formaldehyde and phenol is variously referred to a phenol-formaldehyde polymer, phenol-formaldehyde resin, phenolic, phenolic resin, and phenoplast. Polymers of formaldehyde or other aldehydes with urea or melamine are generally referred to as amino resins or aminoplasts without any more specific names. It is often extremely difficult to determine which aldehyde and which amino monomers have been used to synthesize a particular polymer being referred to as an amino resin. More specific nomenclature, if it can be called that, is afforded by indicating the two reactants as in names such as urea-formaldehyde resin or melamine-formaldehyde resin. [Pg.16]

One of the earliest polycationic polymers was polyethyleneimine (PEI), which was used as a model for studying polycation uptake by hair. This polymer was withdrawn from hair products in the 1970s (for safety reasons). Later, an important class of cellulosic polycationic polymers was introduced with the trade name Polymer JR (Amerchol corporation) and this is widely used for hair conditioning. Other synthetic polycationic polymers from Calgon corporation are Merquat 100 (based on dimethyldiallyl amine chloride) and Merquat 550 (based on acrylamide/ dimthyldiallylamine chloride). [Pg.388]
