Sodium alkyl benzene sulfonates were developed in the early 1970s. The structure of sodium 3-dodecylbenzene sulfate, C18H29S03Na, is given below. 

Bartholme t al. (22) found for styrene with persulfate initiation and a sodium alkyl benzene sulfonate emulsifier that there was a discrepancy between their measured value of E (21.7 kJ mol- ) and that calculated (on the assumption that Att = 0) from the expression EN = /5(E - E ). However their value of E (which was derived from measuremlnts of the rate of seeded emulsion polymerization experiments in which N was the same at all temperatures) now seems to be too high probably because the average number of radicals per particle, n < 0.5 at the lower temperatures taking E =32.5 kJ mol-1 as the best estimate, AHg can be calculated rom AHg = /2(E (exp) - E (calc))... 

Anionic surfactants have a negative head and the major ones are sodium alkyl benzene sulfonate, which is used industrially as a cleaner, and sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate which are used in household detergents and toiletries - see Chapter 3. Soap is also an anionic surfactant. Anionic surfactants produce copious suds and are excellent at removing fats and grease.

Sulfonates With sulfonates, the sulfur atom is directly attached to the carbon atom of the alkyl group and this gives the molecule stability against hydrolysis, when compared with the sulfates (whereby the sulfur atom is indirectly linked to the carbon of the hydrophobe via an oxygen atom). The alkyl aryl sulfonates are the most common type of these surfactants (for example, sodium alkyl benzene sulfonate) and these are usually prepared by reaction of sulfuric acid with alkyl aryl hydrocarbons, e.g., dodecyl benzene. Some of the builders tested by themselves were also evaluated in association with either an ionic surfactant (linear sodium alkyl benzene sulfonate in C12, LABS) or a nonionic surfactant (ethoxylated linear alcohol C12-C14-70E) (Figs. 2 and 3). This evaluation is, of course, closer to usual test conditions, as it is carried out on embryonic formulas containing two of the major ingredients of detergent compositions. Tables 3 and 4 present detailed test results with the test conditions employed, which, aside from the presence of the surfactants, are analogous to those used on the builders alone. As is the case for all user property evaluation tests, the types of tests we have used can be criticized or even involved in controversy. They do, however, as will be seen, make it possible to classify the effects in a relevant way and to bring out clearly the role of the builder.
