In a suspension polymerization, monomer is suspended ia water as 0.1—5 mm droplets, stabilized by protective coUoids or suspending agents. Polymerization is initiated by a monomer-soluble initiator and takes place within the monomer droplets. The water serves as both the dispersion medium and a heat-transfer agent. Particle size is controlled primarily by the rate of agitation and the concentration and type of suspending aids. The polymer is obtained as small beads of about 0.1—5 mm in diameter, which are isolated by filtration or centrifugation. [Pg.268]

For very active RAFT agents, the RAFT agent derived radical (R ) may partition between adding to monomer and reacting with the transfer agent (polymeric or initial). In these circumstances, the transfer constant measured according to the Mayo or related methods will appear to be dependent on the transfer agent concentration and on the monomer conversion. A reverse transfer constant can be defined as follows (eq. 19)... [Pg.504]

Because ozonides are active oxygen compds, they can be used as oxidizing agents, polymerization catalysts, bleaching agents, and germicides. [Pg.469]

Used industrially for the production of nitric acid and as a nitrating agent, oxidizing agent polymerization inhibitor for acrylates and as an oxidizer for rocket fuels. [Pg.335]

The following amine boranes are manufd by the Callery Chemical Co a)Dimethylamine-borane, (CH,)aNH BHS, wh solid b)Tri-methylamine-borane, (CHS)SN BH, wh solid e)Pyridine-borane, CBHSN BHb, col liquid These amine-boranes are relatively stable complexes and are of interest because they act as selective reducing agents, polymerization catalysts, anti-oxidants and stabilizing agents. They may also be used for the prepn of diborane and as petroleum additives. Further information may be obtained from Tech Bull C-200(Ref 2)... [Pg.192]

The second approach is thru the modification of the Compn B formulation and the elimination of cast charge defects, especially at the interface with the projectile base. Studies have centered primarily in the utilization of crystal control agents — polymeric materials, HNS, etc, the finish on the interior of the projectile, and on controlled loading cooling processes... [Pg.342]

Returning to Vollmert s patent (18), we apply the more complete spectrum of operations to his example 1. In this case butyl acrylate and acrylic acid are dissolved in acetone with azoisobutyronitrile (initiator) and dodecyl mercaptan (chain transfer agent), polymerized, and the acetone is evaporated to form polymer 1. Separately, styrene and 1,4-butanediol monoacrylate are bead polymerized with benzoyl peroxide to form polymer 2. Polymers 1 and 2 are mechanically blended with the simultaneous addition of 1,4-butanediol followed by heating to promote grafting and crosslinking. These steps can be represented in some detail by ... [Pg.178]

Methyl acrylamidoglycolate methylether (MAGME) (American Cyan-amid) was filtered while warm and recrystallized from xylene (mp 70 73 C). All other monomers were freed from inhibitor on an aluminium oxide column. p-Trimethylsilylstyrene was synthesized from p-chlorostyrene using a Grignard reaction and chlorotrimethylsilane. Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) was used as free-radical initiator in all polymerizations and carbon tetrabromide as chain-transfer agent. Polymerizations were carried out at 60 C in a 50 50 mixture of toluene and butanol under a nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction was carried out for 3,5 h and the formed polymer precipitated in cold diethylether. It was then redissolved and repreciptated prior to further use. once more IR spectra were recorded on a Perkin Elmer 1710 FTIR and NMR on a 200 MHz Bruker WP 200. FTIR was used to determine the co-polymer composition. [Pg.163]

Propylene oxide is extremely flammable. Propylene oxide-air mixtures may be explosive by contact with heat or by ignition. Propylene oxide is incompatible with acids, bases, oxidizing agents, polymerization catalysts, epoxy resins, and high temperatures. It reacts violently with acetylide-forming metals such as copper or copper alloys. [Pg.2133]
