Working full-time work

Many engineers appreciate that painting, which should be a minor part of an engineering project, can assume major proportions if there are problems or premature failures. For any painting work for which premature failure is economically or practically unacceptable, it is advisable to use full-time, qualified paint inspection. Note that part-time inspection, or visit inspection, can in some ways be worse than no inspection at all.

You are probably working for a medium-sized or large organization (be this as a full-time/part-time employee or a consultant). That said, this chapter, and indeed the whole book, is highly relevant to mentoring schemes in small firms too. 

Born in London, Paul May grew up in Redditch, Worcestershire. He went on to study at Bristol University, where he graduated with a first class honours in chemistry in 1985. He then joined GEC Hirst Research Centre in Wembley where he worked on semiconductor processing for three years, before returning to Bristol to study for a PhD in plasma etching of semiconductors. His PhD was awarded in 1991, and he then remained at Bristol to co-found the CVD diamond research group. In 1992 he was awarded a Ramsay Memorial Fellowship to continue the diamond work, and after that a Royal Society University Fellowship. In October 1999 he became a full-time lecturer in the School of Chemistry at Bristol. He is currently 36 years old. His scientific interests include diamond films, plasma chemistry, interstellar space dust, the internet and web technology. His recreational interests include table-tennis, science fiction, and heavy metal music. 

Figure 8.1 shows the number and proportion of professional and administrative staff responsible for registration, and the equivalent number of full-time personnel. For part-timers, if there are no data on the amount of work-time, it has been assumed that they work half-time (0.5). For Cypms and Zimbabwe, where staff perform multiple functions, the total numbers of staff have been used. 

The number of staff working in these laboratories varies greatly, ranging from as few as four full-time posts (actually two full-time and four part-time staff) in the mini-lab in Uganda, to as many as 131.5 full-time posts (actually 129 full-time and five part-time staff) working for the Therapeutic Goods Administration Laboratory (TGAL) in Australia.

The practical questions concerning laser chemistry may be tersely stated. Another way of measuring accident performance is by the LTIR, or lost-time injury rate. This is identical to the OSHA incidence rate based on incidents in which the employee is unable to continue their normal duties. A plant site has 1200 full-time employees working 40 hr/week and 50 weeks/yr. If the plant had 2 lost-time incidents last year, what is the LTIR ... 

He may also have been influenced by Francis Garvan. In 1926 Herty left his job as President of the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association to become full-time advisor to the Chemical Foundation. One of the lines of work that Garvan asked him to concentrate on was the "vigorous development of a concerted and thoroughly comprehensive backing for Senator Ransdellfs bill"... 

UPS s promotion from within and employee-centric culture can be illustrated by the fact that over 50% of its full-time drivers began as part-timers. Over 70% of its full-time managers were promoted from within. Likewise, 75% of its vice-presidents started at UPS in nonmanagement positions. Over 50% of its full-time work force owns UPS stock. 

In one of these reports, no bladder tumors were foimd in a group of 35 workers who handled only 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine in the same dyestuff plant, bladder tumors occurred in 3 out of 14 workers exposed to both benzidine and 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine. The investigator reported a total exposure time of 68,505 hours, equivalent to nearly 140 full-time working years (Gadian 1975).
