Choosing full-time work

The new roles of retirement fall into four major categories. In the next chapter they are identified as Plans A, B, C, and D. Plan A is leisure. You choose not to work (either for money or as a volunteer). Plan B involves working for money, either for someone else or in your own business on a part-time basis. You give up some of your leisure time, but not all of it. Plan C involves volunteer work, usually through an organization. It also replaces some of your leisure time. Plan D replaces leisure time with full-time work. 

Plan B, when successful, is a special balance of leisure and work that fits the style of an individual. It is a compromise between working full time and a life of leisure. For most who choose this option, it means working 15 to 20 hours a week. If you approach 40 hours per week, you re moving into Plan D. You must design your own plan. When the proper balance is found, both work and leisure may be enhanced. 

Whether motivated by financial or emotional reasons, many retirees choose to work full-time in retirement. 

From 1932 to 1936, Coulson worked toward his Ph.D. at Cambridge. At first he was supervised by the physicist Fowler. Coulson later remembered Fowler "who managed to communicate to me something of his own most evident excitement about it [quantum mechanics]" (Coulson 1955a, 2069). When Coulson was starting graduate work, he asked Fowler what topic to choose for his own research. He had expressed an interest in Mulliken s work on band spectra but was advised to keep away from them "Don t take that up," Fowler said, "unless you are prepared to spend all your life at it. It s a full time job, and if you want to be free to dabble in other topics as they arise, keep away from band spectra" (Coulson 1964, 3). What do you want out of retirement Do you want to move Do you want to stay where you are for part of the year and spend the rest of the year someplace else Do you plan to travel Do you plan to work either full- or part time In what activities do you plan to engage Do you have a dream place in mind What does your life partner want When you begin by thinking about and discussing these issues, your retirement location decision will be easier. The basic message is Plan around the activities and lifestyle you wish to pursue in retirement and make sure the location you choose will support them. 

Today, in the pharmaceutical industry, there exists a variety of technologies to which either partial or full automation of quantitative bioanalytical steps can make the process higher throughout. However, choosing the appropriate technology to automate requires an evaluation of several parameters, including number of samples, type of samples, and time required to automate in comparison to nonautomated work flow.
