Large organisms

The first energy derivative is called the gradient g and is the negative of the force F (with components along the a center denoted Fa) experienced by the atomic centers F = -g. These forces, as discussed in Chapter 16, can be used to carry out classical trajectory simulations of molecular collisions or other motions of large organic and biological molecules for which a quantum treatment of the nuclear motion is prohibitive. 

The most severe limitation of ah initio methods is the limited size of the molecule that can be modeled on even the largest computers. Semiempirical calculations can be used for large organic molecules, but are also too computation-intensive for most biomolecular systems. If a molecule is so big that a semiempirical treatment cannot be used elfectively, it is still possible to model its behavior avoiding quantum mechanics totally by using molecular mechanics. 

The HyperChem program from Hypercube Inc. and UniChem from Oxford Molecular can be used as graphic interfaces to Q-Chem. At the time we conducted our tests, it was not yet available on all the platforms listed as being supported. The current version is well designed for ground- and excited-state calculations on small or large organic molecules.

Chloroformates are reactive intermediates that combine acid chloride and ester functions. They undergo many reactions similar to those of acid chlorides however, the rates are usually slower (4—8). Those containing smaller organic (hydrocarbon) substituents react faster than those containing large organic (hydrocarbon) substituents (3). Reactions of chloroformates and other acid chlorides proceed faster with better yields when alkaU hydroxides or tertiary amines are present to react with the HCl as it forms. These bases act as stoichiometric acid acceptors rather than as tme catalysts. 

The above analysis indicates that the high concentrations of sulfur-containing deposits and corrosion products were caused by the influence of large organisms. Bacterial contributions to corrosion and associated fouling were minimal.
