Full-time work

UPS s promotion from within and employee-centric culture can be illustrated by the fact that over 50% of its full-time drivers began as part-timers. Over 70% of its full-time managers were promoted from within. Likewise, 75% of its vice-presidents started at UPS in nonmanagement positions. Over 50% of its full-time work force owns UPS stock. 

In one of these reports, no bladder tumors were foimd in a group of 35 workers who handled only 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine in the same dyestuff plant, bladder tumors occurred in 3 out of 14 workers exposed to both benzidine and 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine. The investigator reported a total exposure time of 68,505 hours, equivalent to nearly 140 full-time working years (Gadian 1975). 

A minimum of one year is usually required for an individual to make a safe passage into retirement. Sometimes it takes three or four, and a few never make it at all. This happens when one opens a new door (retirement) but refuses to close the old door (previous work) and winds up in limbo, often returning to full-time work and the possibility of a second retirement attempt down the line.

The new roles of retirement fall into four major categories. In the next chapter they are identified as Plans A, B, C, and D. Plan A is leisure. You choose not to work (either for money or as a volunteer). Plan B involves working for money, either for someone else or in your own business on a part-time basis. You give up some of your leisure time, but not all of it. Plan C involves volunteer work, usually through an organization. It also replaces some of your leisure time. Plan D replaces leisure time with full-time work. 

If you have not already done so, before reading this section, turn to Appendix A and complete the Inventory of Retirement Activities (IRA). When this has been accomplished and you have read the chapters in this section, you ll be able to compare your high, average, and low retirement interest activities decide if Plan A (leisure), Plan B (leisure plus part-time work), Plan C (leisure plus a volunteer activity) or Plan D (full-time work) is best for you. 

Retire to full-time work Isn t that a contradiction in terms Perhaps, but the fact is that many people retire from large organizations and seek other full-time employment. Their reasons for doing so vary. Some are forced to retire before they are ready. Others want to stay active and involved in work for financial reasons, emotional reasons, or both. Plan D meets these needs. Here are a few facts about working after retirement ... 

If you gave work a high rating (above 20) on the IRA profile in Appendix A, you have a strong signal that Plan D may be the direction for you to take. You will know even more about yourself and Plan D after you complete the Full-Time Work Preference Scale. If you score high on the scale, this chapter can help. 

This scale is designed to help you discover if full-time work is appropriate for you in retirement. Circle the number that best describes your situation and total your score in the space provided. 

If you scored above 80, it may indicate that full-time work is the way for you to find fulfillment in retirement. If you scored below 60, explore the other three plans more carefully.

Most programs allow for part-time completion of clerkships. This can be arranged on a half-time basis (e.g, 4 hours per day) or, more frequently, students may complete one 4- or 6-week rotation, followed by returning to full-time work for a period of time. This allows students significant financial flexibility.
