Uncaria tomentosa, alkaloids

Evidence in favor of such a hypothesis is given by Jurgensen et al. who have first reported the fact that an alkaloid fraction from Uncaria tomentosa (Willd.) DC, a vine used by Peruvian Indians to treat several diseases, given by the intraperitonneal route, dose-dependently suppressed the behavioral response to the chemical stimuli in the models indicated and increased latencies in the thermal stimuli models (33). [Pg.100]

Another bioactive plant from South America, occurring in the upper reaches of the Amazon in Peru, is colloquially known as cat s claw, or Una de Gato Uncaria tomentosa.of the family Rubiaceae). Anecdotal evidence describes some remarkable cancer cures using a tea made from this plant, and it is available in the United States. The action may be due to the presence of alkaloids, but one is not entirely convinced. [Pg.276]

Cat s claw (Uncaria tomentosa and Uncaria guianensis), an herbal medicine from the Amazon, is widely used to treat inflammatory disorders. Both species of cat s claw provide effective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, but Uncaria guianensis is the more potent of the two. Non-alkaloid fractions from both species have been found to decrease lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced TNF-a and nitrite production in RAW 264.7 cells, and oral pretreatment for 3 days with Uncaria tomentosa actually prevented TNFa mRNA expression and apoptosis. Interestingly, the pharmacological properties of these species do not seem to be dependent on the presence of oxindole or pentacyclic alkaloids [191]. [Pg.181]

Various parts of Uncaria plants are conunraily used in the traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, fii a study, hydro-alcoholic extract (Et0H-H20) and an aqueous extract of bark of U. tomentosa have been analyzed for their antUnflaminatoiy activity [64]. The hydro-alcoholic extract exhibited higher activity in mouse paw edema model and suppressed NF-kB [64]. Phytochemical analysis of these extracts revealed that hydroalcoholic extract possesses higher oxindole alkaloid content than the aqueous extract. It is believed that the antiinflammatory activity of U. tomentosa is attributed to the synergistic effect from a combination of these compounds [64]. [Pg.395]
