Amazon rainforest

A Scientist examines a plant in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. The plant produces chemicals that are used to improve insecticides and medicines. 

Guarana grows naturally in Brazil and the Amazon rainforest. While some locals and supplement manufacturers believe use of the plant can help with weight loss, there is little to no evidence of this. In fact, use of guarana carries several health risks.

There are other health benefits associated with Brazil nut and its related products. The indigenous tribes of Amazon rainforest brewed the husk of Brazil nut seed pods into tea to treat stomach aches. The Brazil nut tree bark is also brewed into tea to treat liver ailments [94]. In Venezuela, Brazil nut sometimes is used as insect repellent [94].

The CalTech study observed combined [MVK + MACR] yields of approximately 12% in the absence of NO, attributable to the minor ISOPO2 1,5-H shift channels [43]. Although this yield is somewhat higher than predicted by the LIM, requiring a factor of 5 increase in the predicted 1,5-H shift rate coefficients, this increased yield does help to rectify discrepancies in MVK/MACR ratios between the LIM and field observations of Karl et al. [22] made in the Amazon rainforest.

An important bitter substance used for making bitter drinks (such as tonic waters) is the alkaloid quinine, which is obtained from the bark of different species of the genus Cinchona (Rubiaceae), especially from the bark of Cinchona officinalis native to Amazon rainforest (see Section 10.3.3.1.5).
