The general theory of the quantum mechanical treatment of magnetic properties is far beyond the scope of this book. For details of the fundamental theory as well as on many technical aspects regarding the calculation of NMR parameters in the context of various quantum chemical techniques we refer the interested reader to the clear and competent discussion in the recent review by Helgaker, Jaszunski, and Ruud, 1999. These authors focus mainly on the Hartree-Fock and related correlated methods but briefly touch also on density functional theory. A more introductory exposition of the general aspects can be found in standard text books such as McWeeny, 1992, or Atkins and Friedman, 1997. As mentioned above we will in the following provide just a very general overview of this... 

The choice of fluoride compound is dictated by technical aspects of the treatment process. Sodium fluoride is easily handled, and tends to be used by smaller utility companies. These reports are based on 120 technical reports (here denoted by KBS TR) on different technical aspects of waste treatment and ground disposal. More than 70 university departments and consulting companies in Sweden and abroad have been engaged in the preparation of these reports. The research on storage of radioactive waste in the ground is still in progress, both within the Nuclear Fuel Safety Project but also within a Swedish-American joint project between Swedish Nuclear Fuel Supply Co(Svensk Karnbranslefdrsorjning AB, SKBF), Fack, S-10240 Stockholm, Sweden, and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Earth Science Division, University of California, Berkeley. 

This section of the Annual Reports comprises five contributions from experts in their fields. These contributions attempt to meld advanced technical aspects of biopolymer selection with more theoretical treatments. As a result, the interplay between the applied and basic scientific aspects of an emergent field becomes apparent. The opus by Dr. Bennett Levitan (Santa Fe Institute) provides one of the first coherent frameworks for understanding selection techniques. This chapter provides a firm connection between the experimental techniques used and the probabilistic models that of necessity underlie these techniques, and should prove to be a benchmark both in understanding why selections... 

The paper is not meant to be a scholarly review of DFT, but rather an informal guide to its conceptual basis and some recent developments and advances. The Hohenberg-Kohn theorem and the Kohn-Sham equations are discussed in some detail. Approximate density functionals, selected aspects of applications of DFT, and a variety of extensions of standard DFT are also discussed, albeit in less detail. Throughout it is attempted to provide a balanced treatment of aspects that are relevant for chemistry and aspects relevant for physics, but with a strong bias towards conceptual foundations. The text is intended to be read before (or in parallel with) one of the many excellent more technical reviews available in the literature. The author apologizes to all researchers whose work has not received proper consideration. The limits of the author s knowledge, as well as the limits of the available space and the nature of the intended audience, have from the outset prohibited any attempt at comprehensiveness.1... 

For my own papers, I expect pretty much the same treatment that I expect from my group of referees. I want the reviewers of my papers to check the technical aspects of my work. I also want them to point out that I m drawing the wrong conclusion from the results if I have done so and to offer some (unbiased) alternative suggestions. Complex degradation processes generally occur to some degree, even in controlled environments. In the case of wood, such processes terminate in reversion to topsoil in the natural environment. The conservation of archaeological wood might best be defined as any effort directed toward the retention of desirable intrinsic characteristics. In other words, conservation attempts to slow down or reverse the process that turns a fauteuil into fertilizer. Consolidation is one of a number of treatments available to conservation. Before approaching the technical aspects of consolidation, it is useful to have an overview of the process and to relate its role to the field of conservation. 

Some technical aspects of DFT are covered elsewhere in these volumes and more detailed treatments can be found in the literature [2, 22-24] so only a brief resume need be repeated here. The essence of the model is the density functional theorem which states that there is a unique relationship between the ground state electron density and the total energy. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) is a safe and efficient therapeutic option for patients suffering from otherwise untreatable pain and disability caused by osteoporotic fracture or tumoral involvement of a vertebra. Vertebroplasty provides nearly immediate pain relief and stabilization, leading to a high rate of successful treatments with low morbidity, no or only short hospitalization, and rare adverse events. In addition, PV contributes to spinal stabilization and can be successfully combined with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, tumor ablation, and posterior laminectomy. Therefore, the number of procedures performed has continuously increased over the last few yccus. However, indications and contraindications, technical aspects, and possible complications of PV always have to be taken into account by the interventional radiologist. The success rate strongly depends - besides on the experience of the physician performing the procedure - on the visualization equipment used, such as CT fluoroscopy. 

Most common complications are small granulomas approximately 2 mm in diameter that show spontaneous remission in 3 years [150,155,156]. The position of LITT among other treatment modalities is not yet settled. It is one of several thermal ablation techniques which share broadly the same indications and contraindications. These can play the same complementary role to surgery, and systemic chemotherapy as well as transarterial chemotherapy in the near future. These ablation techniques differ, however, in their physical nature and this leads to some differences in technical aspects and local effects. If these differences are thoroughly evaluated, the actual effectiveness can be compared. Still, the lack of adequate patient series does not allow the final results of these modalities to be demonstrated in a way to favor one of them completely above the rest. 

A typical PEF system consists of a pulse modulator which supplies high-voltage pulses of sufficient peak voltage and repetition rate, and a treatment chamber in which the product is exposed to the electric field. For pumpable media such as fruit juices, milk or fruit mashes, the treatment can be performed continuously in a tubular treatment chamber consisting of cylindrical electrodes. Whole fruits or pieces can be submerged in water in a flume, but a dry PEF treatment with direct contact between the product and the electrodes is desirable for meat pieces, in order to prevent crossFurther information on the principles and mechanisms of action of PEF, as well as its technical aspects and appUcations, are available elsewhere (Lelieveld et al, 2007 Raso and Heinz, 2007). 

In diis chapter, the main technical aspects of different thermochemical processes for biomass conversion are discussed. In addition, various hydro-thermal treatments applied to lignocellulosic biomass for the production of fermentable sugars, hydrogen or other value-added products are presented. This chapter also describes about pyrolysis along with its various parameters that influence conversion product yields. Bio-oil, which is a complex mixture or both aqueous and organic biomass components, is discussed in details along with its catalytic upgrading for use as transportation fuel. 

This chapter aims to give an easy-reading overview on this theme with particular attention for the more technical aspects of the field. For a deeper and exhaustive treatment of electronic absorption spectroscopy more specific texts are recommended [1, 3].
